The Ujjan Project – A Rotary Global Grant in Action
The Rotary Club of Dalkeith, together with CINI Australia and their Rotary partners in Kolkata, is progressing an important new Global Grant: The Ujjan Project – “Keeping Them in School.” Led locally by PDG Dr S. Pushpalingam and Dr Jennie Connaughton Director CINI Australia. The project focuses on supporting vulnerable children from Rambagan and Sonagachi, two of Kolkata’s largest red‑light districts.
What the Project Aims to Achieve
The Ujjan Project is designed to prevent exploitation—including child marriage, abuse, child labour, slavery, and the ongoing invisibility of the underprivileged. By keeping at‑risk children in school, the project helps adolescents grow into adults with dignity, self‑worth, and the opportunity to break the cycle of intergenerational poverty.
This work is grounded in the long-standing expertise of CINI (Child in Need Institute), an organisation with more than 52 years of ethical, community‑based empowerment for women and children. Rotary partners in Kolkata bring deep local knowledge and hands‑on involvement.
