Our guest speaker for last weeks meeting was new Rotarian Bruce Uren.
As we always find, our members have lived a very interesting and varied life and Bruce was no exception. We had the privilege of hearing and seeing an excellent presentation of Bruce's life. He went through all of his photos and produced a slide show of around 80 slides. When he had finished it occurred to him that he should put it in a file with his will, land titles etc so his children will have an automatic bio for his funeral. Hopefully it will need updating as it wont be needed for sometime yet!
Bruce has lived, worked and travelled overseas as well as spending a lot of time in the remote areas of WA as a Geologist. It is interesting that Gordon Dunbar who introduced Bruce to the club was also a Geologist spending a lot of time in remote areas a long way from the river and both are passionate 'yachties'.
Bruce finished his very interesting life story with his most recent photo with his daughter and son-in-law at their recent wedding. Thank you Bruce for joining the Applecross Rotary family.
Looking forward to this weeks meeting (tomorrow) as we celebrate the Melbourne Cup with our very entertaining and knowledgeable guest speaker, WA racing industry participant and veterinarian Peter Symons. Peter comes from a racing family, with his father and brother training horses for 20 and 30 years respectively.
Our resident bookmaker Mal Taylor will be organising the sweeps and to get into the swing of the day the DOME will have champagne available to purchase for those who would like to partake.
As Liz says "get dressed in your best".
Remember if you can't join us in person you can join us online with ZOOM. Peter will be speaking around 7:45am.
APPLECROSS ROTARY YOUTH EVENT
Well done to our Youth Director Logan Duncan-Smith for organising the 'Applecross Rotary Youth Event' on Saturday afternoon. The main speaker was Michael Frederick from the Fremantle Dockers. Logan did a very professional job interviewing Michael and it was very entertaining and informative. Michael is a very impressive young person who was drafted from Woodville - West Torrens in the South Australian National Football League. Michael engaged well with the small audience that attended.
Thanks also to our other speakers Josh Van Breukelen, Corey Norlin and Tom Bairnes who spoke on RYLA, Rotaract and RYPEN respectively.
Lorri and Liz provided some sausage rolls and sandwiches that were appreciated by the attendees. Click here for some photos.
SUNDOWNER
Thanks to Lorri who hosted this month's sundowner and as you will see from the photos we had a very enjoyable time.
CHRISTMAS LUNCH
Liz has found and booked a great venue for our Christmas lunch, The Vineyard Kitchen at Brookside Vineyard in Bickley.
Just to make sure Lorri, Liz, David, Val and I went for a test run last Thursday and checked out the venue, menu and wine and we all gave it the thumbs up.
Liz will be getting numbers at this weeks meeting and hopefully there will be enough interest for hiring a bus.
PERH MAKERS MARKET
It was very wet at the Perth Makers Market on Sunday which reflected in the numbers attending and our donations we received at the carpark entrances. Our members and volunteers from the Rotary E-Club and WBSS did a fantastic job in very unpleasant conditions. Thanks to Kenn Williams for taking a few pics on the day.
Well maybe not this one!!
Don't forget to bring your Container Deposit Scheme (CDS) and non-CDS type 1 and type 2 containers to our meeting in the morning. The trailer will be in the carpark so just drop the bags in the trailer either before or after the meeting.
