Co - President's Notes Tom Atkinson & Murray McKay
Dear Rotarians and Friends,

Rotarians are busy people and we have a busy few weeks ahead! Our visit from District Governor Pat Schraven, a good friend of our club, will occur on Monday evening 16th September. This event will be shared with the Rotary Clubs of Melville and Canning River ensuring a positive evening of purposeful discussion and project sharing. On Thursday the 19th we will bid an emotional farewell to Valentin who completes his year as a Rotary Exchange Student. This event will welcome a number of Valentin's friends and colleagues from the year and we look forward to a positive reflection of his time in Australia. Both these events will be held at Dome Mt Pleasant, 6pm arrival for a 6:30pm start.

We are also moving into warmer weather which of course means market season! The Perth Makers Market will be held on Sunday 22nd September and requires all 'hands on deck' to continue our strong community presence and fundraising initiatives this year. PMM love a long weekend, which understandably impacts availability for some, but please consider how you can contribute to these important fundraising events that drive our year round community giving program. Please contact Lorri to confirm your attendance.

Our club was also engaged in a Rotary Community Group meeting with 10 other local club Presidents on Sunday to discuss how we can better work together to promote Rotary, build membership and drive collaborative projects. More to come in this area.

Yours in Rotary,

Co-Presidents Tom and Murray

Please advise Lorri on the new email address for this important club fund raising activity of your availability - pmmparking@applecrossrotary.org   Your support is especially needed for the coming event on the 21st and 22nd of September as there will be a few regulars that will not be available.

It was great to have Living Child present an update on the project's developments in the remote outlands of PNG.

Jenn Hammond has taken over as Executive Director from Sarah David, who remains involved as Founder and Midwifery Adviser.  Jenn has been part of the Living Child maternal/childhood health projects for the past 7 years.

She spoke of the ongoing tremendous challenges for the villages in the area, and women and children in particular, as the region was swept by extreme flooding with major impact on their housing and food production. Water supplies and toilets were swept away.

This was followed by a major earthquake with many injuries, ongoing malnutrition and major community health problems. Access for aid was almost non existent but Living Child was able to muster limited support for the villagers. A community needs health survey was undertaken and resulted in the supply of medical equipment for their most basic needs.

Horrific Massacre
Worse was to follow when the villagers were attacked by violent gangs, supplied with weapons from outside the area. 26 were killed, mainly women and children, and 32 homes were burnt down. Even women protecting their babies were slaughtered. This violence is destroying their proud and resilient communities with sporadic and selective violence continuing.

Living Child has now combined with UNICEF in an effort to rebuild these communities in terms of re-engagement especially for the women and children, general health and community engagement for a better future. Because of the extreme violence, this has at last attracted the support of local Police which is seen as a major benefit for the future.

So Much to Be Done
Jenn spoke of the enormity of the work to be done in support of the villagers specific women’s and children’s health ongoing needs, and education for children in order to help lift them out of poverty. Developing Pastoral Care through local church communities and support for young men’s holistic health, hopefully leading to employment, are also underway.

A number of Funding Gaps have been identified and we will possibly hear more of this as a means of further supporting LIVING CHILD and their amazing work in a largely forgotten part of our world.

Thank you to Jenn and Hannah for being part of our meeting and updating on the problems being faced by the communities that LIVING CHILD supports.

Kenn's Musings
Wheelchairs for Kids

What an amazing Rotary story this is, as was outlined by both Valentin, and Peter, from Scarborough Rotary.

Now lead by CEO Greg Hebble, and Associate Member of AxR, this project which commenced in 1998, has now produced its 60,000th wheel chair and these have been sent out to over 100 countries where kids with limited mobility can now claim some independence and pride. It is good to see that our WA Govt has supported with over $900,000, equating to almost 3,700 wheelchairs, and our Premier and other key politicians were on hand in support of this amazing milestone.

An outstanding commitment from Rotary, with Greg now taking it to the next level.

Like our own Jacaranda Festival, it is just so important to take the long view when you have something worth committing to.

Comedy Evening.

Initially we had what appeared to be strong Club support for the comedy evening at South Perth on Friday evening, the 27th of September.

To date only 3 members, plus partners, have committed.

Only $20/ pp, local, easy parking for an evening of laughs… why are we all staying away!

Not too late to join in…let me know asap.

Rotary Community Groups.

We are part of the 11 Rotary Club Community Group under David Barton, as our Community Leader.

It held its first meeting on Sunday afternoon and no doubt Tom will update on the outcomes. However sufficient to say, I think that it was a strong start to rebuilding our broader community engagement with the wonderful work that individual Rotary clubs undertake.

Lots to be done to activate the selected projects at our Rotary Community level, but we do need to make it happen if we are turn around the current decline in our membership and engagement.

It will only happen if we make it happen!!

The Valentin Report
Report September 1
Another fabulous thing ticked off on my bucket list for Australia.

This Monday I had the Opportunity to join Andy, whose wife Raelene is a Rotarian on a flight over the south in a beautiful Sports Plane. We took of from Jandakot and made a big loop all the way to Point Leeuwin along the coast passing all the cities I’ve visited in the last year. It is such a great feeling to be able to see all this. On the way back we took the way over the hills to see the big industrial construction before coming back into Jandakot.

Thank you, Andy and Raelene from Rotary Mill Point to take me on a flight.

After I spoke at our House assembly about my Year, what I learned on my Exchange and what Scotch and especially my House, Shearer, taught me throughout the year.

Afterwards, Rotarian and Mentor Graeme Fardon and Logan Ducan-Smith joined me for a meeting with the Headmaster Dr. Alec O’Connel to show our gratitude towards the school and everyone who made my year the year it was here at scotch.

On Thursday I had my last Assembly, it became a routine for me and now it as it is = the last time it felt really strange.

In the evening, we had the Presentation of our Film we produced all around the school year to the Parents and others. It was a great night with a lot of great pieces.

The one thing which amazed me the most, was to find a Rotary Exchange Student Blazer with all the Badges and Pins in their archives

Before the PSA Interschool Athletics Carnival, I marched my last ever official and marked Marching at school, where Shearer House became second. Unfortunately I’ve never experienced how it feels to win marching but being the all-time second place is also alright. Here a video of our marching: Marching.MOV

Scotch won the Carnival seven consecutive Years, it is the highlight of the interschool sports season, and it just was the greatest event to be a part of. It really had a scene of unity for the whole school.

As year 11s we were allowed to cheer on in period 1 and 2 live on the oval.

And of course we continued watching in class. In the end Scotch won the Trophy the 7 time in a row and broke the record of their 6 consecutive wins 60 years ago.

It was my last actual school day, and it was great. I’m looking back on a fantastic year here at scotch
