An excellent presentation at this week's meeting from a student and teachers whom we assisted with sponsorship for the Leeuwin Leadership Experience. Just a reminder that our next meeting on 23 April is a great opportunity to bring partners and guests as our speaker will be Honorary Member Dr Chris Back. Chris will reflect on his family visit to the opening of the Sir John Monash Centre at Villers-Bretonneux in northern France in April 2018. A meeting invitation will be sent out through ClubRunner to register or call Lorri.
Welcome back Daniel Lombardo from Telethon Speech and Hearing Institute, this time with three of the people we sponsored on the STS Leeuwin Leadership Weekend, and the mother of student Isaac, who will be speaking to us later.
Welcome to Karen Strange from the True Blue Dreaming team in Bruce Rock
Pleased to report that Hamish Turner is back from a second hospital stay to get his antibiotics working
DIRECTORS
Next Fellowship Sundowner will be at George Mavros’ apartment complex near Aquinas College on Anzac Day.
Helen advised that the Defibrillator is now set for reviving people not for demonstration.
Lesley reported the Assistant Govenor's and President Elect’s Workshop last weekend was exhausting, while PE Barry didn’t think it covered much new ground but of course he’s on his second time around. PE Nominee Ray Philp kept his own counsel!
HAPPY DOLLARS
We collected over $45 in Happy Dollars this week, much of it thanks to Kenn’s enthusiastic shakedown of members, especially Eagles supporters. However quite a few members contributed “Sad Dollars” with the fire devastated Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris in mind.
Lesley won the door prize and made off with the white wine
GUEST SPEAKER - ISAAC and his Leeuwin Adventure
Isaac is a year 10 student at CBC Fremantle. He is also a competitive swimmer, having competed in the Swim Through Perth this year, and flagging his intention of a Rottnest Channel Swim in the near future.
Isaac told us he has a long family history in sailing: one of his great great great grandfathers helped build the Titanic, and there have been many others in the merchant navy. His father served in the RAN.
Isaac clearly enjoyed the 3-day experience we provided him, challenging himself to climb to the top of the mast to set the sails, during the rough seas in the afternoons as well as enjoying the tranquility of the night watch under the stars.
Two of his teachers, Karole and Karina also went along and fully participated. The emphasis was on learning to work in teams (essential when setting the sails), using small groups to create solutions to problems, and seeing the value of thinking “outside the box”.
Emily King also participated in the Leeuwin Leadership experience, however was unavailable to report in person. Emily has put together the following presentation about her experience: Click here for Emily's presentation.
