President's  Jottings
Ray PHILP
Looking forward to our face to face meeting tomorrow with our guest speaker Jim Cameron, talking about his research into how the early migrants came to terms with the Western Australian environment which was very unfamiliar to them.

Please bring along to the meeting your donations for FOODBANK.

As Greg Hebble informed our meeting a few weeks ago, the call on their supplies is increasing due to the continuing issues caused by the pandemic as well as the devastation caused by Cyclone Seroja.

This week's FOOTY MARGINS winner is Elizabeth Aaron  with West Coast beating the Freo Dickers by 59 points.

Our Changeover and 50th Anniversary celebrations will be on Tuesday 6th July at The Sunshine Harvester Works, 1 James St Fremantle.

Secretary Chris Whelan has issued a challenge to Applecross Rotary members and friends to let him know the contact details of past members and/or friends who might enjoy this celebration so he can send them a formal invitation with all the details when finalised. Email Chris at the following address - secretary@applecrossrotary.org

Our club has been invited to tour BRIGHTWATER'S OATS STREET FACILITY.  Last year we had an interesting presentation on Brightwater's Music Pharmacy.  The Brightwater music and wellbeing program explores how socially stimulating music can be for people in general, as this benefits all in the community.  Brightwater Oats Street is a community based residential rehabilitation service for individuals who have experienced an acquired brain injury.
Email Liz Palmer if you are interested in attending - lizsdrop@hotmail.com

All club members are invited to meet the District 9465 team, hear about Rotary updates, learn about our District programs and share how we will Serve to Change Lives in 2021-22 at the upcoming District 9465 Assembly on 30 May 2021, 9am - 2pm at the North Lake Campus, Kardinya. Ayrton is a year 10 student at the Applecross Senior High School.

Thanks to George Mavros with a top up from Kenn Williams we received another $93.70 from the Containers For Change scheme.  This brings the total to $517 since the scheme started in October 2020.  Well worth the effort!

Applecross Rotary's 'jar' was runner-up in the April Grill'd LOCAL MATTERS competitionThe "wheelchairs for kids" group took first spot and the Board decided to donate our winnings to them as well.  The last time we entered the competition (February 2020) we won receiving the most tokens.  It is pleasing to see the local public has a high regard for Rotary.

Melville City Rotaract is planning a social fishing afternoon on Sunday May 23 at Floreat Beach from 3:30pm.  President Andrew has fishing equipment and will demonstrate filleting and will also bring along a smoker.  Kenn Williams has volunteered to be the club member in attendance for insurance purposes and other members are welcomed to join the event.

Early Colonial History

Jim majored in geography at UWA, specialising in historical geography, and completing a PhD in 1975. The content of his doctorate reflected his experience as an immigrant. He was intrigued by the various methods migrants used to come to terms with the Western Australian environment which was very unfamiliar to them. He focused on how the first group of immigrants (1829 onwards) developed their agricultural systems.

Since completing his doctorate he worked as a teacher, teacher educator, and part-time historical geographer, in several state education systems and universities, increasingly overseas, particularly Southeast Asia and the Pacific. Now fully retired, he has settled back into Western Australia and spends his time as a woodturner and occasional writer of colonial geography.
