THE FINAL COUNT DOWN! 13 days to go ...

Co - President's Notes Tom Atkinson & Murray McKay

Dear Rotarians and Friends,

I’d like to draw your attention to 2 Rotary managed “Hubs” providing opportunities for collaboration on the key issues of Homelessness and Environmental Sustainability.

The Tree Mission Project, supported by the National Trust, provides an opportunity for individuals and Clubs to promote Carbon Offsets through their own Tree Planting activities, while allowing tax deductible donations through the National Trust for supporters. Environment is a key Rotary pillar and this resource for localised activity will be used more by our Local Rotary Community Group in coming months. Read more here - https://www.ntwa.com.au/give-to-ntwa/treemission-a-tree-planting-conservation-initiative/

The Rotary District 9423 Homelessness Hub is also a key resource for collaboration on this major societal issue.  With projects linked to building more homes (of varying purpose) as well as supporting those seeking accommodation, there is an opportunity for every community member to find a way to assist through this Rotary run group. You may even wish to add your own project to the list for others to jump on board. See live projects here - https://rotarywa9423.org.au/sitepage/homeless-hub

We are seeking Rotary members to represent Applecross Rotary on both of these groups. If you are passionate about either issue and wish to get involved please contact Tom Atkinson for further details.

Yours in Rotary,

Tom & Murray

Co-Presidents 2024/25

GUEST SPEAKERS: Peter Symons & Brett Hunt
How Many Vets does it take to enjoy our Annual Melbourne Cup Breakfast?

If you answered 4, you are close but no cigar! (see answer as the end of this short report)

Our guest speakers at this year's Melbourne Cup breakfast were Peter Symons and Brett Hunt and they regaled members and friends with various anecdotes, around the theme “Are Jockeys a Necessary Evil”.   Dunbar.

They also judged the “best dressed’ outfit and awarded it to Gordon

Peter told us that the first thing successful jockeys learn is how to lie, and they especially enjoy lying to the stipendiary stewards who police the race meetings.  Famous Perth jockey JJ Millar made a point of never cooperating with the stewards, and did all he could to be the main focus of race day and constantly seek fame and recognition.  Like most successful jockeys JJ struggled to keep his weight down, and took to wearing a plastic track suit when training and covering his body in salt when in the sauna.  When asked what his best weight-loss diet was, he said: Crushed ice on lettuce!

Jockeys can also make a lot of money, legitimately, and possibly the most successful one in recent times was Damian Oliver who was already worth $1.5m when he finished his apprenticeship.  When asked what drove him to succeed he said: The Thrill of winning.  Damian Oliver’s successful record is worth reading, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Damien_Oliver

In Peter Symon’s view, being a successful jockey requires courage and judgement, and they need to be tough as someone is always criticising them.  Some self control when being questioned by the stewards might help them avoid suspension.  In one incident Peter recounted, the Chief Steward asked the jockey where he learned to ride, after losing the race on the favourite. His angry reply was: On your sister!

There were lots of others funny stories recounted but they were not fit for publication!

There was 6 vets at the breakfast, 4 veterinarians, PLUS 2 service veterans  - Chris Dawson and David Palmer! Which is a reminder to come to our Day-Late Remembrance Day Breakfast on 12 November, and meet our guest speaker, former RAN Commander John Scott, Vice-President of Torchbearers for Legacy, WA.

Jacaranda Festival: 13 sleeps away!

It’s certainly all happening as we head into the last 2 weeks of pulling all of the loose ends together!
* Chris has been doing the heavy lasso work of keeping the whole show on track, marshalling our volunteer army and paying attention to all the details.

* all the entertainment for kids and families is well set, alongside all the final stall management protocols.

* publicity is going out far and wide thru our Rotary Social Media channels, WeekendNotes, HaveAgo News, Market Life, Sponsors, and Mal hit Capital Radio on Saturday morning, with Mike to do another stint next week.

* all the signage is now up on the key roads … 2 on Riseley St, near Garden City, 4 on Canning H/way, .. 2 near Wireless Hill and 2 on the approach from the East, plus the 2 in Applecross Village. It’s almost like Blind Freddy could not miss them!
Thanks to the team yesterday that helped put up the final 6 on the main thoroughfares.

* this week and next we will sort and make final placement arrangements for all of the signage for the JacFest itself, this year with an extra entry point to cover.

* next week is the final briefing sessions for ALL of our volunteers, including AxR.

The 14 day forecast suggests some uncertainties of heating up towards the 24th, and other sites suggest more of the same with mild to warm conditions expected.
Fingers crossed for it not getting too b… hot!

I think that whatever comes for our day on the 24th will be nothing in comparison to what happens in the old U.S of A when the Donald takes the Presidential Throne again about 60 sleeps away! Just saying…..

Kenn.

Legacy in the 21st Century
Legacy in the 21st Century
John joined the RAN as a cadet midshipman in 1976, and after service on HMAS Melbourne and the Naval Air Station at Nowra in NSW, held several senior appointments and promoted to Commander.  John left the navy in 2002.  John then began a new career in senior roles with TAFE WA, culminating in being Director of the CY O’Connor College on TAFE, based in Northam but serving over 200 small communities in the Wheatbelt, an area the size of Victoria.

When TAFE was restructured in 2016, John chose to retire, and give back to the community through service in Legacy.  John is also an active member of the SES in Rockingham, responding to emergences within the cities of Rockingham and Kwinana.
