We Give A Feed - You can too!

Co - President's Notes Tom Atkinson & Murray McKay

Dear Rotarians and Friends,

The preliminary figures for the Rotary Jacaranda Festival are in and it seems that our stall fees and sponsorships have almost covered the cost of putting on the Festival. These costs include support the volunteer groups and community organisations such as the Waylen Bay and Fremantle Sea Scout groups, Manning Rippers Football Club, Mama Respond and various community entertainment groups. We would like to thank our volunteers for their participation because without them the Festival would not happen.

Some of the community volunteers have generously agreed to give their offered donations to support families in need through Give a Feed and Foodbank. Last week, our guest speakers gave a good description about the setup of Give a Feed and how Foodbank operates and achieves. They really deserve all the support that we can muster.

With all the success that our Club is having this year, it is important that we look forward to the future with optimism. For that we need to have a transition team into the 2025/26 year in place very soon. It is time for all members to start thinking about how they can assist the club’s development into the future. If you are interested in being on the Board or taking on another role, there will be a meeting this evening (3rd December) and all members are welcome as observers.

Please think about how you can assist the Club going forward – if you are waiting for a ‘tap on the shoulder’ please consider yourself tapped so that the Magic of Rotary can continue.

GUEST SPEAKERS: GIVE A FEED
Accolade for Applecross Rotary

Give A Feed (GAF) founders Wayne Smith and Aaron Pitt visited our Club recently to thank us for continuing the support we give to feeding families at Christmas.

GAF started as a Heirisson Rotary project and is now in its 13th year.  Not only did our members take the opportunity to donate funds to buy more hampers again, but we also had a party of volunteers head for Foodbank WA headquarters at the International Airport to pack them, a few weeks ago.  The building is ‘bigger than Bunnings’ according to one of those volunteers, who told us he walked back and forth for 7km, just getting packets of mashed potatoes from where they were stored, to where the hampers were being packed, without leaving the building!

The Accolade was a great compliment.  However, even though Rotary still has its brand of every hamper box, the percentage of Clubs supporting GAF has dropped right off.  Fewer Clubs are actively supporting GAF, so this could mean more WA families are facing a bleak Christmas when it comes to feeding the family.

Demand has grown.  In 2010 the target of 500 hampers (for a family of four) was met, and back then you could donate a hamper for $20.  In 2023, 4500 hampers were distributed.  The cost of a hamper has risen to $50 (and Foodbank then adds an extra $20 value to each hamper - thanks Foodbank!)

We then heard from Ian de Nazareth, Foodbank WA’s Senior Fundraising and Partnerships Manager.  He told us that we don’t ‘see’ poverty every day in WA, like you do in many parts of Asia, but it’s there!  Over 1000 families are currently accessing food from Foodbank WA, every day!

So members, Give a Feed this Christmas.  The website also shows you how you can give a hamper in the name of a relative or friend, instead of another pair of socks.

And thank you Ian, Wayne and Aaron for visiting us.  Our Club has been very supportive of Give a Feed for 13 years, and one of our senior members has already been in touch with the District to ask for a message to go out to all Rotary Clubs in WA to encourage their members to get involved.

HEAR YE, HEAR YE, OH HEAR YE
After another hectic Applecross Rotary year, it is definitely the time to celebrate our successes … at our Christmas Party, next Sunday 8th Dec.

Where: Manning Rippers FC. See below for map (1 Jarman Ave Manning)

Arrive: for a 5pm start… check out before 9pm.

Dress up for a celebration and let’s have some festive fun, fine foods and the odd drinkie.

AND ………..

Don’t forget SINISTER SANTA and his wicked ways of testing every recipient of a gift!! If you want to play, bring a long a gift to a maximum value of $10.00.

In the midst of a busy Rotary year it is easy to forget the enormous volunteer contribution we all make to help someone’s life, somewhere, a little easier to enjoy.

Well done Applecross Rotary on another outstanding year for our less fortunate fellow travellers!

Onwards and upwards to 2025!

Kenn.

Co-President Murray accepting certificate from Alfonso Soliano Melville Cockburn Chamber of Commerce (MCCC)

At our last meeting we were joined by Alfonso from MCCC who thanked Applecross Rotary for supporting the inaugural MCCC Business Awards 2024.  Applecross Rotary sponsored the Sustainability & Climate Action Award.

Alfonso was able to experience first hand an example how Rotary through partnerships with the business community can achieve great community outcomes such as 'GIVE A FEED'.
