President Margaret's Notes

Dear Rotarians and friends

As I sit happily in my new abode I look forward to putting my Rotary hat firmly on my head.

It is apparent the current situation in the middle east and resultant global challenges are impacting on our Rotary world despite the safety and security we enjoy in Australia. The fuel insecurity has caused the RYPEN Camp to be cancelled with travel uncertainty for regional participants.

Graeme Fardon, in his role as Chair of RYEWA, works tirelessly with the RYE programme and it’s students. With the upcoming Northwest Safari, Graeme and his team now have to negotiate fuel issues and the aftereffects of Cyclone Narelle damage.

Our thoughts are with those caught up in the widening war zones and those tackling the challenges of post-cyclone recovery. As Rotarians, global citizens and people of action, it is difficult to know just what we can do, how we can help.

Yours in Rotary

Margaret Brede

Guest Speaker - Don Briggs

Don Briggs was our guest speaker last Tuesday and is a former Rotary Club president and Paul Harris fellow. He has studied many topics over the years and we had the opportunity to choose from eight them.

Spoilt for choice, we referred the decision to President Margaret, who in light of the current petrol crisis, chose the history, present status and future of Metronet.

A brief synopsis of his comprehensive but lively presentation is that Metronet Stage 1 became WA’s largest public transport infrastructure program, which evolved into a multi-agency government initiative to expand Perth’s rail network.

It was first proposed in December 2012 by the opposition Labor Party as a set of rail infrastructure projects for the 2013 State election.

The initial plan included new lines to Ellenbrook, Perth Airport, and Wanneroo, extensions of the Joondalup line to Yanchep, the Armadale line to Byford, and the Thornlie line to connect with the Mandurah line.

The design envisioned a north circle and south circle route - to integrate existing and new lines for improved connectivity. Although Labor did not win the 2013 election, the concept persisted.

Following Labor’s victory in 2017, the McGowan Government established Metronet to deliver the party’s commitments.

The projected cost was $10.7 billion and was to be completed over four years to reduce congestion, and to improve Perth’s public transport system. As we now know, Stage 1 was finally completed in February at a cost which is yet to be announced, but far in excess of its original estimate.

There was a lot of information to absorb, but with the aid of detailed photographs of new completed stations and colourful artists’ impressions of others being built, Don gave us an entertaining overview of what Metronet has achieved and what is yet to come.

One of our members, Dawn, was directly involved with aspects of Metronet and shared some insights with Don, which he described as valuable feedback.

President Margaret said that Don’s presentation made her want to jump on a train and just enjoy travelling the different lines and exploring stations and surrounds for a day.

Kenn's Musings
Suresh Prabhakaran, Surya Ambati and Kenn Williams attended this months MCCC BAH's event

1. Applecross and Melville Rotary have received a special matching Membership Grant from Rotary District 9432 which will enable both clubs to develop a closer working relationship with the Melville Cockburn Chamber of Commerce to sell the benefits to business of joining with us in community charitable giving.

A prime objective will be to increase the awareness of Rotary’s community impact across the 1700 businesses currently on the CoC’s mailing list, and its approaching 250 Members, with the intention of increasing the membership of Rotary

Applecross and Melville, under their respective membership committees, have put the successful submission together, and now it is the time for actioning the proposal and this will be the immediate priority. Stay tuned!
The project will ‘officially’ run for the next 8 months but the intention is for it to be a much longer term relationship with the MCCC

Our contribution to the project will be a matching $1,000 with District, and Melville are providing similar support. Of interest is that Surya has expressed an interest in being a key to this relationship with the Chamber.

At a separate meeting with the Chamber last week, David Porter, of Melville R and I agreed to each of or Club’s, subject to approval, plus Attadale R, sponsoring a CoC Business Award at their May event, to be held at the South of Perth Yacht Club.
Attadale are also keen to be part of the longer term relationship with the Chamber.

This will be a great start to building the closer working relationship with the CoC under the combined Rotary clubs banner.

2. I had an interesting meeting with a key member of the Indian and multicultural community on Saturday, in Rakhi Bose.
  • Rakhi was introduced through Surya Ambati, our new member, with the plan of seeking her communities support for some of the heavier lifting of our community project work. Think JacFest and Perth Makers Market.
  • The plan is in engaging some willing support for the asset management and manpower required for set up etc of our key major fundraising activities.
  • Rakhi led an Indian dance group at our ‘25 JacFest, and is keen to participate again at this year’s event. She was recently awarded ‘The Artist of the Year’ by the Office of Multicultural Interests,  a successful nomination forwarded by Chris W following the most recent JacFest.
Of interest to her, in reciprocation, would be to have AxR, or local Rotary, support her plans to introduce regular special NFP (not for profit) community dance and music seminars as an aid to general community wellbeing, especially for our older citizens. Worthy of investigation for mine, given the known benefits, and I will throw over to our Community committee for further development with Rakhi.

3.  For Rotary WA, with its Centenary of community activity due in 2027, there will be a fair bit happening in the lead up to a major Expo in Forrest Chase in mid April next year. Certainly AxR will have a part to play in all of this, especially re our own contribution to a better community life.

Be prepared and think ahead… 100 years of Rotary is not to be ignored, along with the over 50 years that AxR has been part of this.

Kenn.

In autumn each year South of Perth Yacht Club host “Cruising Butterflies” to take children with life-long health issues onto the Swan River on members boats to enjoy a morning of fun on the water.  This is a partnership with
Kiind (a support organization from Perth Children’s Hospital) and  sponsors including Applecross and Melville Rotary Clubs.

Kiind invite about 150 children along with their parents, siblings and carers to attend this special day  for the children that also gives their families a short respite from the 24-hour a day caring duty.

After the morning on the water there will be a sausage sizzle lunch,  live entertainment and special guests and events.  The day will wind up early in the afternoon.

Applecross Rotary, as in previous years, have been tasked with the BBQ duties, cooking and serving sausages in a bun (supplied by SoPYC) and to organize car parking, both inside SoPYC and on the Heathcote Lower Land.  We have been asked to bring our Rotary branded marquees to hold the registration and welcome desks and to also bring along our Rotary banners.
