Co - President's Notes Tom Atkinson & Murray McKay

Dear Rotarians and friends,

Last week our local Rotary Community Group (RCG) organised a webinar session with John Berger from the WA Alliance to End Homelessness. Every meeting on this topic re-enforces the complicated nature of this all encompassing issue, but John had a wealth of knowledge having been a leader in the sector, and pointed us to both community and Rotary based initiatives that would be worthy of support.

John's presentation slides can be found here -

I would encourage members to view the Rotary Homeless hub also to find a number of existing Rotary projects to end homelessness -

Applecross Rotary is fortunate to again be one of the local community groups being supported by Grill'd Restaurant in Applecross. We are looking to organise a dinner at Grill'd in the near future, please tell others to get down and put a bottle cap in our bucket!

Yours in Rotary,

Co-Presidents Tom and Murray

THIS WEEK'S SPEAKER
Come and meet Dr Simon de Lestang, who has arguably the best job in WA - Principal Research Scientist at the WA Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPRID).

His main task is the stock assessments of western rock lobster, deep sea crabs and southern crustacean fisheries.

Simon will tell us how the number of lobsters available to fishers to catch is successfully managed, and lots of other fun stuff!

Prospective member Judith McGowan with Barry Mendelawitz (L) and Brad Franken (R). Judith and Barry are both involved with the Citizens Advice Bureau, a topic for a breakfast presentation in early March

GUEST SPEAKER - Dr Chris Back
No Fuel = No Fires

Our Honorary Member Dr Chris Back is very well credentialed to talk about bushfires - what the Americans call wildfires. Chris was invited to become the CEO of the WA Bushfires Board after many years as Chief Quokka on Rotto.  He had a big job to do.  The Bushfires Board was in disarray, their hundreds of volunteers had lost confidence in their Board and strongly felt that outside of their local community, no-one one cared about them or the job they volunteered to do to protect the properties in their shire.  They even joked about how the Board responded to major bushfires - the DEAD process.

D = Disaster
E = Enquiry into the Disaster
A = Apathy, no-one did anything about the enquiry recommendations
D = yet another Disaster

Chris and several others well credentialed citizens formalised the current prescribed burning plan that now exists in WA, but not in some other states like Victoria.

This graph tells the story - comparing bushfires in Victoria (red triangles) and WA (blue dots) according to the amount of prescribed burning that was carried out before the bush dried out after the winter rain.

Climate Change is one reason for the bushfires we experience each year, but Chris emphasised it is NOT the only reason we have more major fires each year.  If you ban prescribed burning, there is a build up of fuel on the bush floor.  And banning prescribed burning is what some local councils have been persuaded to do - for ‘environmental’ reasons, or because they have a fear of a controlled burn getting out of control.

One of the jobs Chris did was persuading local councils to stay focussed on reducing most of the fuel on the forest floor before the late Spring when “dry lightning” thunder storms might ignite a fire - but if there was little or no fuel, there would not be a major fire, and it could be controlled by the local Bush Fire Brigade.

Finally, turning his attention to the recent California Wildfires, Chris asked us to look at this graph - the upper half of the landmass shown is Southern California, and lower half is Baja California in Mexico - Mexico starts just south of the big red patch.  The colours indicate how old the vegetation is - the red bits are less than a year old, which suggests there was a fire only a year ago.  No prescribed burning in Southern California, no codes relating to building materials and tree and garden plantations.

WHY? It’s already smoggy enough without using prescribed burns to make the air even more difficult to breathe!

UPCOMING REQUESTS FOR SUPPORT
I have had 3 requests for support at Rotary events/activities coming up in the next couple of months, as mentioned at our last meeting.

As Follows:

1 Hyde Park Festival is being held on the Sunday and Monday 2nd/3rd March and Warrick Smith has asked if AxR can support with some of our project infrastructure… Ute and trailer, large and small marquees, trestles and chairs and the delivery, erection and pull down, on the Saturday and later Monday.
Warrick is planning for a significant and major upgrade for Rotary Mental Health at the event, with speakers and opportunities for the public to engage with this initiative.

It would need 3, preferably 4 to support this request.
I’m in, who else can help?

2. Warrick is also is seeking AxR support to join as project co-ordinators for the GIVE A FEED Christmas Hamper appeal, which we already commit to in terms of hamper packing and donations.

He is planning to elevate the Rotary role in this project by seeking more community and corporate support, with more Hampers for delivery as a result.

He has offered to address AxR as a speaker in the not too distant future and I think we should be prepared to support the request.

3. Open Day at Capital Radio set down for Sunday, 30th March.
David Barton, our Rotary Community Leader, our local Rotary Clubs, along with the City of Melville and Capital Radio, are planning a special community promo day to help boost the interest in local community radio.
Request is for AxR to support the day, be available for Rotary interviews and supply our BBQ trailer for the crowd expected to attend.
More info to follow on this but again, it makes sense to be part of the open day.
Capital Radio have been great supporters of AxR and the JacFest over many years.

It is the weekend of the Margaret River District Conference.

All for now….
