President Barry welcomed Bec Stott from Anglicare Street Connect, and Visiting Rotarian Roger Painter before launching theAMR Aware video, mostly shot at the recent Rotary Jacaranda Festival. Barry also announced it was his dog’s birthday (again!).
At the December board meeting, a motion was passed for community donations to 24 beneficiaries for a total of $15550 for their support of the Applecross Rotary Jacarranda Festival. The draft minutes of the meeting are now available on ClubRunner documents.
Ian Fairnie asked members to help make the final meeting for 2019 on 17 December, a good one. Not only is our outbound exchange student Connor Ovens showing off what he is going to tell the Germans next year, but we are going to indulge in another round of Sinister Santa. Just remember to bring a wrapped present (maximum value $15) so you can play the game.
Chris Whelan asked for more support for Perth Makers Market on Sunday 15 December, especially setting up the day before. He reminded members that since we started helping with the parking three years ago we have received $50,000 in donations, as well as collecting $10,000 through the spinner and water sales.Click here to download roster.
Lorri Brazier is looking for help with present wrapping on 17 December for the Starick Children’s party on 20 December. Lorri also mentioned that Doug Telfer is home and ready for visitors, (please says Beryl!).
Clive Pearson has two nominations for the Pride of Workmanship for excellence in customer service, ready to go and would like a third, please ask him for more details.
Peter McEwen went to Katmandu Tuesday afternoon to scope another AMR project, and we’ll hear more about this next week. He also celebrated a wedding anniversary this week!
Bec had previously spoken to our Club very briefly as part of our focus on Homeless Youth on 2 July, together with Stitches of Hope and Foodbank. We asked her back to hear more about her work.
Bec came to her current job 12 months ago, after 9 years with Ronald McDonald House. Street Connect has helped over 41,000 young people this year; many of these are the fallout from domestic violence as well as sexual orientation conflicts with parents. There are more than 3000 young people sleeping “on the street” every night in Perth, including those couch-surfing and sleeping in cars. There are only 1144 crisis beds available for emergency accommodation.
The Street Connect Bus is a critical part of the service provided, and is a registered postal address for Centrelink and also for justice services. The bus is over 20 years old and needs replacement. Services linked to the bus cost $575,000 a year. See more at https://www.anglicarewa.org.au/get-help/youth-services/street-connect
Foyer Oxford is a cutting edge youth housing service located on Oxford Street in Leederville. Part of the international Foyer movement, and run by a consortium that includes Anglicare WA, the multimillion dollar project is founded on the idea that ending youth homelessness can be achieved through education, training and sustainable employment. It has the capacity to house and support 98 young people, including 24 young parents and their children. It is the largest single-site homelessness service for young people in Australia. Final meeting for 2019: Tuesday morning 17 December.
Finish the calendar year with a memorable morning of fun as we play SPITEFUL SANTA once again. Bring a wrapped gift of between $5 and $20 (max) and see what happens next!
Importantly, it is our Club’s opportunity to hear our outbound exchange student Connor Ovens present, in English, the talk he will give hundreds of times in Germany (and in German) while on exchange with the Rotary Club of Willich next year. The talk is meant to convey information about the country Connor comes from, something about his family and friends, and what he’d like to do after he comes home at the end of 2020. Of course this talk will change as the year progresses when he’ll start rehearsing in late 2020, the talk he’ll give us in early 2021, in English, about his time in Germany.
Please plan on coming along, bring friends and family, especially anyone who may be a future outbound exchange student.
