PRESIDENT Barry welcomed Guest Speaker Greg Hebble, the CEO of Foodbank WA.  Hamish Turner won the wine thanks to Chris Caithness’ tossing.

REPORTS
Chris Whelan reported on the Perth Makers’ Market.  While it was agreed that fewer people attended the markets, they were very generous with their parking donations towards the RAWCS Bushfires Appeal – we banked close to $3000.  Chris advised the Board had decided to make a donation of $4000 to RAWCS by utilizing Club funds and any individual member donations to bridge the gap (please advise Chris if you have done this).

Chris Caithness urged members and partners to come along to the dinner meeting next week (so NO BREAKFAST MEETING next week) and bring anyone who might be interested in Rotary Youth Exchange, especially hosting our inbound student.  The meal at the Brentwood Karooda Sports building, is free to visitors and guests, and will cost members and partners only $15.

Ray Philp updated members on the Greenbatch Alliance, which gives us an opportunity to form better links with local schools.  Ray also announced the Club has purchased a portable EFTPOS appliance making easier to collect monies in our increasingly cashless society.

Clive Pearson advised that he hoped to present four Pride of Workmanship Awards at our meeting on 24 March.

HAPPY DOLLARS
MC John Kelly described it “like shooting fish in a barrel” by collecting donations from all members who failed to respond to the suggestion of wearing a Rotary Shirt to the meeting.  We banked $27 as a result!
FOODBANK WA: FIGHTING HUNGER IN AUSTRALIA
Greg Hebble has been CEO of Foodbank WA for over 10 years.

From a very small start in a vacant house in Belmont 25 years ago, it moved to a building in Welshpool 20 years ago and quickly outgrew that, before moving to a much larger facility at Perth International Airport.

For much of its history Foodbank has rescued food destined for landfill, but in the past 5 years the need for food has escalated.  Last year Foodbank WA provided 6.1 million meals as food relief.
In addition this year 21,500 children at 490 schools throughout WA are being provided with breakfast at schools, every week!  Teachers provide most of the volunteers for this.  That’s up from 160 schools in 2009.

Demand has outstripped supply so Foodbank buys basic food staples to ensure it can feed hungry families, through its main Perth warehouse and five regional operations.  It also has a new mobile Foodbank, with two more on the way, delivering food to people who find it difficult to access public transport. Nearly half the people accessing food via agencies like Vinnies and Anglicare have full time jobs, but still can’t provide enough food for their families.
National food companies donate and sell food to Foodbank and companies such as Westpork donate processed meat.

The main warehouse in Perth also has a commercial kitchen and most days corporate volunteers prepare 400gm frozen meals that are provided to local government agencies for elderly home care programs.

HOW CAN WE HELP?
There are three ‘staples’ - UHT milk, Baked Beans, and cereals/pasta.   They are cheap to buy, so just Give a Damn and Bring a Can each week to breakfast.  Greg Hebble lives a 3 minute walk from our breakfast venue and will take our donations to Foodbank every Tuesday morning.
WATCH THIS SPACE: A Vocational Service visit is being planned for May, to Foodbank WA’s main warehouse at Perth International Airport.  After a tour through the building, we will be treated to lunch.

Introductory offer from our previous guest speaker - Richard Seale

Please visit http://frontporchfilms.com.au and follow the links to ‘life and family history’. Here you will see my ‘life story e-book’ which includes text, audio, photographs, web links, and professionally shot imagery all packaged together. As an introductory offer*, prices start at $350 (normally $500). A bit of research online will quickly show this is very good value for money (nb: I’m not in a position where I can do pro bono).
I truly believe in my product, and that a market exists, but raising awareness to the point where interest becomes sales (and I can eat) has been an enormous challenge. Do you know of anyone who might be interested? I will certainly put my heart and soul into it, and whoever engages me will realise it was well worth it.
