Rotary Wear Your Shirt Day Tuesday 25 February

The purpose of the day is a no cost marketing activity to create more awareness of Rotary. Each Rotarian is asked to wear a Rotary shirt all day to create conversation and get people to ask What is Rotary?

It would be great to see all our members in a Rotary shirt for our breakfast meeting in the morning.

President Barry welcomed Visiting Rotarian John Lightfoot from Albany Port, guest speakers Karen Strange and Janine Dayman from Bruce Rock, and Remy Spring from Georgians Making a Difference (St George’s College at UWA), who had come along to hear the guest speakers.
As well as winning the wine (thanks to Clive’s tossing), Kenn Williams inducted Karen Strange as an Associate Member, forming a stronger relationship with the mentoring program at the Bruce Rock District High School, which has been supported by Applecross Rotary for the past four years.

REPORTS
Suresh Prabhakaran asked members to support the Melville City Rotaract Quiz Night on 28 February ($15/ticket), and Liz Palmer reminded us that there would be no breakfast meeting the first week of March as we would be holding an evening meeting (6pm for a 6.30pm start) at the Brentwood Karoonda Clubrooms, at Karoonda Reserve in Booragoon.

HAPPY DOLLARS
Shantigeet Prabhakaran is celebrating a birthday, Kenn Williams pledged to keep his Holden until he died, and MC John Kelly asked President Barry about his advocacy of “handwishing” in last week’s Applecross AdvocateJohn Henderson also asked the President to confirm that Daniel Kerr’s attack of street napping in Kalgoorlie was not virus related, as an empty carton of Corona was found next to him.
MENTORING COUNTRY KIDS
How one Rotary Club can make a difference to a whole community:
Janine Dayman and Karen Strange

Some years ago PP John Kelly introduced “True Blue Dreaming” (TBD) to Applecross Rotary, and after an MOU was signed we undertook to support mentoring of students at two rural District High Schools: Bruce Rock and Wyalkatchem.  The mentors were sourced from Notre Dame University (mainly medical students) and St George’s College at UWA.  In short, our support made a HUGE DIFFERENCE to the rural students in every key measure – improved academic outcomes, social outcomes, mental health indicators, and career aspirations.

Some changes last year saw TBD refocus its attention onto Juvenile Justice, while a change in senior staffing at Wyalkatchem meant the school support there for TBD basically disappeared.  And unlike Bruce Rock, the local shire had not been as strong supporter of the program.

Applecross Rotary continued its funding of TBD for 2019-20 but after the program at Wyalkatchem ceased in late 2019, we had half the funds provided to TBD returned to the Club.

Meanwhile the folks at Bruce Rock saw this as an opportunity to reconfigure the management of the mentoring program, which has been renamed “Wheatbelt & Beyond Youth Mentoring”.

AxR  receives a Communities Environment Programme Grant

Tom Atkinson and Ray Philp recently met with Rachel Thompson who is the Greenbatch Schools Coordinator, to discuss the implementaion of our successful application for a Communities Environment Programme Grant. This Federal grant of $15990 is to provide 2x240L collection bins and a Greenbatch school education presentation for each of the 26 schools in the City of Melville.

This will be an excellent opportunity to form a closer communication between Rotary and the schools to promote our many youth projects.

Also this will be an opportunity to demonstrate Rotary's focus on environmental sustainability that has the potential to attract a new wave of people to join us.
