Last week started with a bang when 24 club members, partners and friends attended the Millbrook Winery lunch on Monday 19 July 2021. The food, wine and company were fantastic and we look forward to a return visit. Once again, special thanks to Liz and Lorri for organizing the function.

At last Tuesday’s meeting it was great to see PP John Henderson back at the Club, after a short illness, and also to see PP Murray McKay attend the meeting.  There was an exchange of Club banners with Murray’s club “Baldivis”. We look forward to seeing more of Murray and Leslie.

With John present, we took the opportunity to formally acknowledge his wonderful 37 year contribution to Rotary and our Club. Chris Dawson presented John with Applecross Rotary’s Life Membership Award to a warm applause. Lorri is planning to host a special luncheon to honour John’s achievements and will advise more details at Tuesday’s meeting.

PP Dr Ian Fairnie conducted a fireside chat with myself for the guest speaker segment. I thank Ian for not asking too many difficult questions!

This week our guest speaker is PP Gordon Hudson, who has been a Rotarian for 54 years with the Scarborough Rotary Club.  Gordon will be speaking  on a great cause, “wheelchairs for kids”.

As mentioned in last weeks Advocate, membership of Melville Cockburn Chamber of Commerce has been progressed and a motion has been circulated to the board.  Benefits include the promotion of Rotary and access to potential new members. There may also be the opportunity to institute enduring vocational awards in collaboration with a Cockburn club.

We look forward to seeing  you at Liz and David’s home this Thursday for our monthly Sundowner.
LIFE MEMBERSHIP presented to PP John Henderson
PP Chris Dawson and Life Member PP John Henderson

John Henderson was presented with his Life Membership plaque at the Breakfast Meeting on the 20th July 2021.  Unfortunately, John was unable to attend the 50th Anniversary/ Changeover 2021 party when Chris Dawson did the presentation in John's absence, however Chris Dawson was able to do a rerun at the breakfast meeting to John in person.

John joined Applecross Rotary in November 1984 and was Club President for the 1995/ 96 Rotary year. John was acknowledge with a PHF in 1998.

In presenting John with the Life Membership plaque, Chris spoke of his early connection with John though his father and John both running very successful farm machinery businesses in the Great Southern Region in the 1960s.  John is known for his community spirit throughout his life.  Chris also mentioned the memorable Club social events at John and Helen's property in the 'hills' were a highlight of the Club's social calendar over the years.

John thanked the Club for the honour of being presented with Life Membership and recognised Helen as the reason for his success in his business and community life.

John joins PDG Bruce James as Life Members of Applecross Rotary.

DOWNLOAD the DG Newsletter Issue 1 - July 2021.  This is in a new format and it is well worth at least downloading and skimming though the document to see if there is anything of interest for you.  I am sure you will find something of interest and the section 'Clubs In Action' is a great way to see what other Clubs in the District are doing.  This edition has an article on our 50th Anniversary event from AG Kenn Williams and our project with Mama Respond from Chris Whelan.  This newsletter is sent to every Rotarian in our District so if you have not received it let Ray Philp know and I will follow-up.

4. DISTRICTS 9465 and 9455 to Merge effective 1st July 2023
Most of you will be aware Rotary clubs in WA are currently supported by two Rotary Districts, District 9465 for clubs mostly south of the Swan River and District 9455 for clubs mostly north of the Swan River.
Rotary International (RI) has issued a directive at their June Board meeting that the two Districts in Western Australia will be merged effective 1 July 2023.
We await further information and guidance from RI regarding the process, and once this is received it will be shared with all members and an appropriate steering committee with representatives from both our Districts will be established.
We understand there may be some questions, and we ask that you please forward any queries regarding this to your District Governor/s via these emails:

District 9465 Pat Schraven e: redistrict@rotary9465.org.au
District 9455 Dee Buckland e: info@rotarywa9455.org

VOLUNTEERS ALL
Did you know that this FREE community event, supported by Grants from Lottery West and The City of Melville, requires around 1000 hours of volunteer time, with 600 hrs given on the Festival day alone!

Applecross Rotary works in very closely with many community groups, who willingly give their support, and proceeds of the day are largely shared back with these groups.

Over the past 10 years, at least 25 such groups have shared directly in the distributions, totalling $100k, and a further $75k have been given elsewhere.
Over recent years the distributable profit has increased, meaning that more can be given back to our community.

Since 2010,  over $440k has been raised and distributed from the event, with much of this spent with local business that provides services to the Event.

What a truly wonderful means of not only giving our community a great day out, but also providing the helping financial hand that is so vital for community business and volunteer groups.

WHY NOT JOIN IN ........

Applecross Rotary is always seeking the involvement of those keen to give back to the world, and especially our own local community.
Either as Members of the Club, or volunteering to help on the day, you will always be made welcome.

JUST RESPOND THROUGH THIS FORUM AND Applecross Rotary will definitely give you the details of how to become involved.
