PRESIDENT Barry welcomed guest speaker President Ross Grafton from RC Canning, and past Rotary Youth Exchangees who participated in a Q&A following Ross’s presentation:
Jack Noonan (Spain), and past Applecross members Gabriela Pasqualon (Brazil-Mt Barker), Kate Zappa (Belgium) and Dalton McWha (Italy)

President Barry also welcomed Alison and Aaron Weidenbaum, and Amanda and Mika Saunders, who came along to learn more about Rotary Youth Exchange (RYE).
ALL ABOUT ROTARY YOUTH EXCHANGE (RYE)
President Ross has spent much of his Rotary Life (29 years) involved in RYE and so was the ideal person to tell us more.

RYE is the Gold standard of youth exchange.  It is the longest existing program, and puts student safety first.  There are over 7000 young people on RYE right now, all attending secondary school in their host country, and all staying with host families selected by the host Rotary Club.  Host families provide a bed and food.  Host Clubs also provide a weekly allowance and provide some other assistance.  The parents of the RYE pay more of the costs, currently around $8000, but there is a Financial Assistance Fund available to help families that are not about to afford this much.

A lively Q&A session followed.

As members know, we have Connor Ovens currently living and attending school in Willich, Germany, and two potential applications for outbound exchange in 2021-22 - Izzy Bannerman and Aaron Weidenbaum, with Mika Saunders a possible outbound applicant for 2022-23.

What we don’t have are host parents lined up for our inbound student from January-June 2021 (ideally two periods of 3 months), or volunteers to provide some special weekend or holiday fun for our inbound exchange student.

Chris and Brent Caithness are hosting for the first six months, apart from 4 weeks when they are heading off to see Connor, so any help members can offer in that period would be gratefully received.

Of course having people offer to host is probably dependent on knowing who is coming to us and from where.

Hopefully we will know this very soon!
Containers for Change
Containers for Change is WA's new recycling scheme that lets you cash in your eligible drink containers for 10c each at any authorised REFUND POINT

Containers for Change launches on 2nd June 2020.

Our club has registered for a Containers for Change Scheme ID that is a unique identifying number that is securely linked to our nominated bank account.  Anyone returning eligible containers to an authorised REFUND POINT can choose to donate their refund to our Scheme ID (Donation Point), with refunds transferred via direct deposit to our bank account.

Our Scheme ID is C10240570.

A media statement from the WA Government on the 16 January 2020 announced the initial successful applcants for refund point operators. For media statement click here.

If you would like to know more 'Containers for Change' has hit the road and providing Community Information Sessions across Western Australia.

Our Club is an active participant on the Rotary WA - Greenbatch Coordination Group.  This group has been working for sometime now to become Greenbatch Foundation's community service organisation of choice and the relationship will be converted to a formal agreement over the next few months.

The Greenbatch Foundation's focus is on community collections through education, engagement and empowerment.  Its activities include the establishment of a dedicated recycling education facility in Mt Claremont, and a schools recycling programme.  Working together with Greenbatch Foundation as a collaborative partnership, the waste plastic problem in Western Australia can be addressed and improve community engagement to change behaviours.

As previosly reported our club has successfully applied for a Federal grant to provide two collection bins and a Greenbatch education presentation to all of the schools in the City of Melville.  Working with the other Rotary clubs in our cluster we will form closer relationships with the schools to encourage more participation in the many Rotary youth projects/activities.

There is also a significant opportunity to raise funds through the Container Deposit Scheme.  Greenbatch will be REFUND POINT and has its own collection trucks for the metropolitan area, as well as relationships with Woolworths in regional areas to handle the logistics.

By Rotary working on plastic pollution and the effect on the environment, we not only do some good in the world, but also potentially attract a new wave of people of all ages to join us.
