A warm welcome to our new 'ASSOCIATE' members who were formerly presented with their name badges at our special dinner meeting last Wednesday evening. A huge thank you to PP Ian Fairnie for stepping in at the 11th hour as our guest speaker. Ian set the scene with his presentation on 'VOLUNTEERS' prior to the Associate member presentations.
This week's 'Cluster' meeting with the other clubs (Booragoon, Attadale, Melville) in AG Lesley Coombes's group, is an excellent opportunity to look for project collaboration opportunities as well as enhancing fellowship between our clubs. Your attendance would be appreciated.
Congratulations to PDG Bruce James, celebrating 48 years in Rotary. Bruce joined Rotary on September 21st 1971. Bruce was State President of APEX and joined Applecross Rotary when he was no longer eligible for APEX membership. Bruce has been on Club and District Committees and was District Governor in 1991-92. Bruce also celebrated the 70th aniversary of his 21st birthday at our special dinner meeting.
Also celebrating his Rotary anniversary is PP Clive Pearson. Congratulations Clive, joining South Bunbury Rotary on September 20th 1983, President South Bunbury 1988-89 and transfered to Applecross in September 2016.
When did you start volunteering? This question was posed to me by the CEO of Volunteering WA Sally Davies in 1985, when I introduced her to a new organisation at Curtin University, Curtin Volunteers! I replied: I haven’t really done much volunteering, and she responded I bet you have!
Slowly she got me to confess I had been volunteering most of my life, it’s just that I never thought much about it, and certainly never thought one needed any training to be a volunteer. But I did, and it struck home when I took over responsibility for Curtin’s radio station, which had four paid staff and over 100 volunteers.

Rotary, the Environment and New Generations
In 2015 the Board of Rotary International (RI) announced an Environmental Sustainability Rotarian Action Group (ESRAG) to help protect and sustain our planet’s environment for present and future generations. Last year RI President Ian Riseley made environmental sustainability a major focus for his year, and each of The Rotary Foundation’s areas of focus now includes aspects of environmental sustainability. June 2019’s Hamburg RI convention put environmental projects on display as Rotarians focused on cleaning up plastic waste, protecting our vital resources.
We know that many young people are driven by causes, and the environment and plastic pollution is often on top of the list. We are now seeing state and national political recognition of this. By Rotary working on this issue, we not only can do some good in the world, and leverage the public image potential of its popularity, but also potentially attract a new wave of people to join us.
Recycle NOW with Greenbatch. Why? Because if you put your recyclable plastic container in the council recycling bin, it is baled up and sold to the global waste market and shipped overseas. Greenbatch Processing will be WA's first waste plastic processing plant, capturing the local plastic waste market.
