PRESIDENT BARRY opening the meeting by welcoming guest speaker Ian Carter AM, and one of our Honorary Members, the Hon. Dean Nalder MLA, plus regular visitor Kevin Sansome from Toastmasters’ International
Barry stated that COVID-19 provides the springboard to a renewed focus on One Health.
Dean Nalder commented that there are only three active cases left in WA.
Dean also addressed concerns about the forthcoming 20th anniversary JacFest. He was optimistic about it going ahead but said the social distancing issues would need to be resolved well beforehand.
Dean was also concerned about the WA economy stating that there was already an increase in mortgage stress before the pandemic, and now there’s been a big increase during the pandemic.
REPORTS
Helen Jones remains in the Mount Hospital but is being prepared for discharge home, possibly via Respite Care.
Ray Philp reported on the PETS he attended via Zoom with 50 other Presidents-Elect. The District Dues have been set at $135, a drop of $20, but RI insurance has increased by 20%, partly due to exchange rate changes. There will be one District Assembly for next year’s Office Bearers in June, again via Zoom, and next year there will be a Combined District Conference at Optus Stadium to celebrate 100 years of RI in Australia.
HAPPY DOLLARS
Birthdays: Liz Palmer 21 May, Val Philp 22 May and Chris Whelan 26 May.
Peter McEwen had an angry dollar for the unjustified Chinese tariffs on WA barley, while Clive Pearson was happy that the collapse of his iPhone didn’t really cause his world to also collapse, as it seemed to do at the time.
