Following  the very sad death of Helen last Thursday afternoon,  Ian has asked that we honour her life through a legacy fund to help two Zimbabwean projects close to Helen’s heart, AWARE Trust (https://www.awaretrust.org) and the Victoria Falls Wildlife Trust (https://vicfallswildlifetrust.org)  In this way we can remember a fine lady, a dear wife, mother and grandmother, a  great friend to the animal kingdom, a scholastic veterinarian of note, a supporter of rhino conservation in Zimbabwe and a much respected Rotarian.

On learning about Helen’s death, a Zim vet wrote: "Helen has been an active member of SAVE for many years and led many veterinary safaris to Zimbabwe.  She was a caring, generous, forthright person who had a remarkable career and did a lot to improve the veterinary standards of practical care for wildlife and learning at the Veterinary Faculty at University of Zimbabwe.   Helen also impacted local vets at the Zimbabwe Veterinary Congress with her lecture on safeguarding mental and physical health while working in a demanding practice”

Helen, the first woman to lead the veterinary profession in Australia, was a valued and respected member of the SAVE committee for ten years and her presence and wise counsel will be sorely missed.  In her honour, a sub adult female rhino has been named after her, as in the above photo.

The legacy fund will honour the life of Dr Helen Jones (Fairnie) AM, and we invite all her admirers to support these worthy causes with your contributions, please. Thank you.

VALE Dr Helen Jones-Fairnie

A very sad week for Applecross Rotary with the passing of our member Dr Helen Jones-Fairnie last Thursday.

We had the privilege of Helen's company at our recent social lunch hosted by Lorri Brazier at her home.  Helen joined the Canning Bridge Rotary Club in 2010 and transferred to Applecross Rotary in 2017. She was awarded a PHF in 2013.  Helen was an active Rotary member and will be sadly missed.

Helen's achievements through her working life are amazing and an article in the VET Practice magazine  titled "Dr Helen Jones and  her brilliant career" is an excellent testament.

On behalf of the Applecross Rotary family I extend our deepest sympathy to Ian and his family.

Sundowner at the William's place

An enjoyable time was had by all who attended this month's Sundowner at Peta and Kenn's home.  Weather was pleasant and we enjoyed a great selection of snacks including some rocky road and churros with chocolate sauce provided by 'sweet tooth' Bower.  Photos

GUEST SPEAKER (22 Sept.2020)
Our guest speaker was David Motta, a building engineer with JLL looking after Central Park and a member of Osborne Park Rotary.  David become involved with Rotary's Homeless Hub and when the "My Home" project was started David volunteered to look after the project for the group.

David's talk covered -
  • the background to the homeless issue
  • the 'My Home' project, and
  • what Rotary can do to support this project
The main driving forces for homelessness are domestic violence and affordability.  There are 9000 plus people considered 'homeless' in WA each night and 30% are Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islander. The homeless we see on the street are only about 10% of the issue with about 50% of homeless living in cars or moving around; couch surfing, boarding houses etc.

The target for the 'My Home' project  aren't the 'rough sleepers' as they require more support and other programs/ projects are supporting them,  The 'My Home' project is focused on people who cannot afford their own home but are capable of looking after a home.https://www.shelterwa.org.au/case-study/allans-stroy

2020 Reconnect Week
Reconnect Week is 5-11 October

This would be a great opportunity for the club to join in the annual celebration that is Rotary Reconnect Week this October!

An excellent time to reconnect with past Rotary program participants including Rotary Youth Exchange, RYLA, RYPEN, etc.

There is potential for our past participants to reconnect with the club through assisting with our existing and new projects/events or one of the new more flexible membership categories.

LETS PLAN TO RECONNECT
