Co - President's Notes Tom Atkinson & Murray McKay
Dear Rotarians and Friends,

This week we celebrate National Volunteers Week with 2 key events:

Tuesday 20/5 - Breakfast Meeting @ Dome Deep Water Point with Kay Eva - Stitches of Hope. Join us for Breakfast as we celebrate our volunteers with an update from one of Rotary's great projects assisting the homeless. Coffee and a Muffin on us!

Thursday 22/5 - National Volunteer Week Event @ Mt Henry Bridge Park. Visit Applecross Rotary's water feature at this renewed local playground to celebrate our volunteer efforts for the last year. Coffee and morning tea provided.

Volunteers are the lifeblood of Rotary, we see the impact of this every day, most recently at our last Perth Makers Market of the season. Thank you to all the terrific volunteers from a variety of organisations that make this and our many Rotary fundraisers an ongoing success!

Yours in Rotary,

Co-Presidents Tom and Murray

"I’ve just been in Switzerland and told our partner club there about Rotary in Australia and of course the rest of my amazing experience there".

GUEST SPEAKER: Kate Barrett-Lennard
Pathways beyond crime and trauma

Some of us remember Family Therapist Kate Barrett-Lennard speaking to us four years ago, about the book she had begun writing.  She recently returned with several copies of her book, and a whiteboard.  According to a review I read, the book discusses the transgenerational trauma influences behind acts of crime. "It presents the journey of human becoming from the very worst to the best.”  As a Family Therapist, Kate helps people take care of themselves and learn to take care of their relationships.

Kate told us every family has a story, and this one is about Harry, a ‘really nice guy’.

Don’t know about you, but I haven’t seen anyone use a whiteboard for years, and yet the way Kate used it made here talk very informative, and powerful.  There was no way she could have used PowerPoint or a video to make the same impact.  Unless it was a video of Kate telling her story using a whiteboard of course, so I’ll do my best with this write-up.

Kate described the picture she drew during her talk, as a Genagram, because it was about three generations in a farm family, using used circles and squares to represented women and men.

It was all about Harry, a really ’nice guy’, plays footy for the local club, helps run the social club, everyone’s mate, that’s Harry.

The Genagram starts with his parents, shown at the top of the drawing, and their four children, one of whom, Harry takes over the farm having promised to pay for it with four annual instalments of one million dollars.

Harry marries a nurse and they have four children, one of whom, Jane, is very intelligent and autistic.  Harry’s wife continues to work as a nurse which provides welcome income for the family.  Unfortunately she has a near fatal fall from a balcony and needs ongoing rehabilitation.  And of course stops work.

Harry isn’t coping, and he becomes scared his wife will leave, taking the kids with her, leaving him alone.  He is scared.  Very scared.

The local police are asked to make a welfare call at the house because friends are concerned the kids are not at school, and they discover the murdered bodies of the three kids and their mother, and Harry, who has committed suicide.

Kate leaves us to ponder the question:  Would intervention have prevented the eventual tragedy?

I think you’ll have to read Pathways beyond crime and trauma to find out what Kate thinks is the answer, and how she would have helped Harry reclaim his life and identity.

I really didn’t know what to expect from Kate’s presentation, but I am so glad she came along and spent some time with me and the others members attending our weekly breakfast meeting.

ROTARY ART SHOW and SALE
Time is fast approaching for the annual Art Show. Just 2 weeks away!

I have attached the Roster and as you will see there are still a number of “gaps”. Would appreciate you giving consideration to filling in wherever possible.

I have an idea that Chris and I will be moving house over that period. Our apartment is completed and the developers are waiting on the “Green light” from Melville for Occupancy Certificate and Landcorp for Titles. Consequently, we don’t have a precise date but pretty sure the move will be early June. Either way I won’t have as much time to man the stands as has been the case in past years. Hopefully the move will be all done and dusted by due date – (hopefully sooner but??) and if that is the case that my time will be limited.

Could you please let me know if you are in a position to participate.

Kenn's Musings: A belated on travel
Just a quick overview of our recent travel to Scandinavia, Scotland and Ireland. 3 weeks of the dreaded lurgie upset earlier good intentions.

COPENHAGEN and HELSINKI.
First happy stop after flying from Perth to Singapore was in Copenhagen for a 30 hour quick look before landing in Helsinki and the start of our fabulous Northern Lights journey up thru Finland, into Lapland and the Arctic Circle and the the top of Norway… 30 km from the Russian border at Kirkenes.
JOURNEY NORTH.
It was a long trip north from Helsinki via train and the snow to Rovaniemi to experience LAPLAND, wonderful husky, then reindeer sled rides, Santas home village, before bussing into the Arctic Circle and Saariselkä and staying in a glass topped ‘igloo’ and watching an unbelievable Northern Lights display… from the warm comfort of ones own bed!!
On via bus and the deepening snow to the Snow Hotel in Kirkenes before boarding the Hurtigruten coastal trader/passenger ship south, down the coast of Norway for 6 days, stopping at around 9 townships deep in the fiords and very dependant on this trade.
How they survive in this environment, let alone live, is an unfathomable question?
THEN SOUTH AGAIN.
Unbelievable snow scenes from the ship, with the craggy mountains dropping into the Arctic blue waters.. lots of salmon farming, and not until we were again south of the Arctic Circle did we see the green of trees and agriculture again appear.
The cruise ended in Bergen, Norway before a stunning ferry trip on the lakes and then a stunning train journey across the alps to Onslo, the capital.
BONNY SCOTLAND, then IRELAND.
A couple of days in this wonderfully clean city before heading to Edinburgh and an amazing Highlands Tour, taking in the harsh landscape of the western half of Scotland, including a couple of days on the Isle of Skye( including Portree for Mal!), on to Inverness and the old battle grounds  of Culloden, then Loch Ness, a whisky tasting and so much more of the Scottish history. No wonder Murray wears his ancestry with pride!
Back to Edinburgh for more exploration, including the Castle, and off to Dublin, for 4 days of the best of Ireland and its wonderful history and site seeing opportunities.
Then the long flight home.. Dublin to Heathrow, Singapore then Perth.
So good to hit the home pillows after so many wonderful sites and memories.

A comment on long haul flying: Travelling Premium Economy on those long legs is a wonderful uplift to ‘down the back’ and can certainly commend Singapore Air for their offer. Almost Business Class at a big discount!

A great journey and could recommend to anyone.
