Time to get serious about the environmental, schools relationships, membership and fund raising opportunities we have with the Containers for Change initiative and our partnership with the Greenbatch Foundation.

  1. ENVIRONMENT - supporting the environment has become Rotary's seventh area of  focus, which are categories of service activities supported by global grants.
  2. SCHOOLS RELATIONSHIPS - through the Greenbatch Foundation schools program we have the opportunity to form closer links with the school community to promote Rotary and our programs such as Youth Exchange, RYPEN, RYLA etc.  Schools have been allocated to Rotary Clubs in our Zone with our schools being Applecross Primary, Brentwood Primary, Mt Pleasant Primary, Ardross Primary and Applecross SHS.  Our club successfully applied for a Federal Government grant to supply all the schools in the City of Melville with 2 free bins, bin liners and an educational presentation from Greenbatch. Rotary is being invited to attend the presentations.
  3. MEMBERSHIP - with Rotary having more of a focus on the environment it will make club membership more appealing to younger generations as well as members of the community who have a strong interest in the environment.
  4. FUND RAISING - the government's Container for Change program that refunds 10c per eligible container is a significant opportunity to raise funds for our community and global projects/activities.  There are 1.3 billion eligible containers used in WA each year. By using our contacts with businesses to setup collection agreements with Greenbatch and negotiating for a percentage of the container deposit to be donated to our scheme ID C10240570 will realise an additional income source.  We also have a grant to purchase our own collection bins that we can use at events such as the Jacaranda Festival and Perth Makers Market.
Bring your containers that you have collected to Tuesday's meeting as we will have the trailer with the collection bins.  Remember the differentiation between Greenbatch and the other Containers for Change refund operators is that they will collect and process the non-CDS type 1 and type 2 plastic containers as well.

This weeks guest speakers from Brightwater Care Group

This week we had a very informative presentation from Brightwater Music and Wellbeing coordinator Hayley Antipas, on 'why music is good for the mind'.

Music is known to alleviate stress, reduce agitation, evoke emotion and boost self-esteem.

It can have a positive effect on people of all ages and circumstances - especially those with cognitive impairment such as dementia.

Brightwater has created the Music Pharmacy - a unique program that uses evidence-based  practice to link neuroscience, music therapy and psychology with music and social wellbeing.

HAPPY WEDDING ANIVERSARY HELEN and JOHN HENDERSON

Helen and John Henderson celebrate their 68th wedding anniversary on Tuesday 6th October.

John has been a member of Applecross Rotary for nearly 36 years and was president in 95/96.

Going back into the archives of the club history I have found that in PP Ian Lander's year (90/91), the Advocate regularly profiled a Rotarian partner.

The following is the 'MEET HELEN HENDERSON ' article in the Advocate that just happened to have their wedding photo.
