THE FINAL COUNT DOWN!

Co - President's Notes Tom Atkinson & Murray McKay
Presentation of the Applecross Rotary, Environmental and Sustainability Award won by Blue Leaf Water Cremation

Dear Rotarians and Friends,

Our recognition of community focused business leaders continued last week as Applecross Rotary sponsored the "Environmental and Sustainability Award" at the Melville Cockburn Chamber of Commerce awards for this year. Our club was well represented with 8 members attending. The event was a worthwhile exercise with members interacting with various business leaders as well as key councillors and local identities, with many ideas and opportunities shared.

Rotary of course started as a club for business people, now overtaken in that area by quality groups such as MCCC. Nevertheless, the role of individuals to contribute to their community through their working life cannot be understated, and it is for this reason that Applecross Rotary maintains an involvement in such initiatives. Well done to the MCCC for a terrific event and to all local businesses who contribute so much to the fabric of our local communities!

Yours in Rotary,

Tom and Murray

Applecross Rotary Vocational Visit to The Studio School
Rotarians are Community Influencers (if we want to be!)
A few months ago All Saints College Principal, Belinda Provos, told us about ‘what matters at All Saints’ and mentioned the creation of an alternative school in Fremantle - The Studio School.

Ten Applecross Rotarians accepted Belinda’s invitation to visit to the Studio School a few weeks ago and at a recent breakfast meeting some of them commented on the visit.  We were hosted by the Head of the Studio School Nina Anderson.  Nina had previously been Head of the Senior School at All Saints.

All ten Rotarians who visited the Studio School came away very impressed.  Former school Principal Margaret was taken by the collaborative behaviour the students were exhibiting as we walked through the beautiful old building in Adelaide St, Fremantle.  They were working alone or in small groups and seemed focussed on the tasks they had set themselves.  Students and staff call each other by their first names, and while this is a friendly gesture there was clearly respect that was accorded to one another.  President Tom (an “Old Saint”) was impressed by the obvious Trust he perceived, that was also two-way, and he believed the students were building communication and Interpersonal skills that will serve them well in the big world awaiting them.

Nina told us the students thrive in the learning environment they help to create, and understand and respect the few rules they have agreed to follow.  She remarked that students who come from Montessori schools seem to adapt to the Studio School very quickly.

The school aims for a total of 120 students, 40 in each of years 10, 11 and 12.  Some of them come from the main All Saints campus in Bull Creek, and others are direct entry, usually into year 10.  ATAR subjects are offered and the University of Notre Dame Library is happy to serve the needs of all students at the Studio School.  Several former students are now enrolled in university as well as TAFE courses.

So when a friend asks you for advice about a son/daughter or grandchild that doesn’t seem to be ‘fitting in’ in their current secondary school, tell them to have a look at the Studio School in Fremantle.

GUEST SPEAKER:  Graeme Thygesin
Global Grant for India

RC Fremantle President Graeme Thygesin visited us recently to talk about the Global Grant project his Club is hosting in India, and Applecross is supporting - the Mandurai School Toilet Block Project.  (Mandurai is a city in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu in southern India.)

Mandurai School Toilet Block? Surely they could come up with a better name - my first thought.  But as Graeme went on to explain the “Why”, it seems the current toilets were actually stopping kids from attending or staying at school.

The school was established in 1993, and services students from a number of remote villages.  Most families live on subsistence incomes.

There are 800 students in this school.  There are more girls than boys, but the girls are leaving the school because of its toilet facilities.  There are only 5 toilets, colloquially know as ‘long drop toilets’ - you get the picture without needing the picture!  Only 5 toilets for 800 students AND their teachers.

So the project for a new toilet block should and probably will reverse the early departure of girls and answer the prayers of the teachers for new separate toilets for them.

The plan is to build 20 modern toilets for girls and women teachers, plus 10 modern toilets for boys and male teachers.  It includes a Reverse Osmosis plant to provide clean drinking water.  Currently they only have bore water to drink, and even though they can buy bottled water for USD 10 cents, these are poor families remember.

The project also proposes upgrading the school computer lab - it currently has 6 computers for 800 students.  The plan provides for 50 new desktop computers, computer furniture, printers and projectors.  All the more reason to stay at school, especially if they can get more toilets, new toilets!

So maybe the Toilet Block project is a very appropriate name!
