President Barry welcomed everyone back from their Christmas break, including guest speaker Hilda O’Callaghan, and also wished our outgoing Youth Exchangee Connor Ovens a safe trip to Germany.
Chris Caithness wishing her son Connor a wonderful 12 months away on exchange, Ian Fairnie glad that Helen Jones’ book on women vets is finally available after a very long gestation, and Chris and Helen Dawson celebrating birthdays.  Kenn Williams wished Suresh Prabhakaran happiness and good fortune on establishing his petroleum engineering consultancy.  Cecil Aaron paid up for winning a bottle of red as a consequence of Suresh’s expert tossing!  And of course we were all very happy that the reports of the passing of Bruce James had been grossly exaggerated!  President Barry accused Bruce of mixing up his religious festivals of Christmas and Easter!
Lorri Brazier announced Gordon and Diana Dunbar would be hosting the next Sundowner on 30 January at the friendly sunset hours 6.00pm-7.30pm.
Ian Fairnie added some pins for Connor’s blazer and advised Honorary Members Ben Morton and Dean Nalder would be sending Connor off to Europe with a national and a state flag.
Suresh Prabhakaran advised that Melville City Rotaract was planning a Quiz Night to raise funds for support of families affected by bushfires, and that as a consequence of the fires the National Youth Science Forums in Canberra has been cancelled.
Applecross Rotary farewells OUR Exchange Student, Connor Ovens
A proud time for Applecross Rotary members, especially PP Ian Fairnie who made it one of his goals as the 2018-2019 President, when  RYE student Connor Ovens jetted off for a 12 month adventure in Germany. It has been at least 10 years since Applecross Rotary has participated in the Youth Exchange programme.
Connor's mother, Applecross Rotarian Christina Caithness, knows what a great experience this will be for Connor as she remembers her RYE experience to Finland 25 years ago.
Honorary Members Ben Morton and Dean Nalder arranged for a national and state flag to send Connor off to Europe with and Ian added some pins for Connor's blazer. Jordan Keesing from Ben Morton's office presented the flags to Connor.
Connor arrived in Germany on Saturday evening and was met at the airport by his host family.  He is hosted by the Rotary Club of Willich, near Dusseldorf, and close to the Netherlands border.
We now need to start planning for this year:
  1. Finding host families for an inbound student due in late June/early July (need 2x3months) as well as asking which Rotarians are interested in including him/her for weekend activities.  We expect to know by then where the inbound student is coming from and whether female/male.
  2. Looking for potential outbound students for 2021.
Ian Fairnie and Chris Caithness are planning to have an information meeting for potential parents/students regarding Rotary Youth Exchange so they can find out about the programme, but also seek potential interested parties to host the incoming student who is due to arrive in July 2020.
Guest Speaker Hilda O'Callaghan:
Hilda O’Callaghan grew up in South Africa, where 1 in 3 children are sexually abused.  And in common with other countries, it is not “stranger danger” that is the issue, as 96% of sexual abuse occurs from family and friends.
Hilda’s mantra is that children have “The Right to Feel Safe at all Times”, whether in the family, at school or in the general community.
Hilda runs Protective Behaviour courses to help children become unattractive to perpetrators, to learn about Safe v. Unsafe secrets, and how to talk to someone about anything at any time.  And to keep on telling until they get the help they need.
Her courses help children develop a safety network of adults who:
  • are available
  • listen
  • believe
  • take advice, especially if their parents are unavailable.
