PRESIDENT BARRY welcomed Honorary Member Chris Back to our meeting and also congratulated Vice President Ian Fairnie on being awarded an AM in the Australia Day Honours List.

Barry also announced that he had secured a 20 minute speaking spot at the District Conference which he will share with Midland Rotarian Colin Hughes in a joint presentation on AMR and Sepsis: “which kills more people than all cancers combined!”  He hopes that a number of members may come to that session of the Conference and provide vocal support!

REPORTS:
Logan Duncan-Smith announced that RYLA recipient Corey Norlin will come to next week’s meeting to thank the Club for supporting him.  He also advised that Melville City Rotaract is hosting a Quiz Night next month to raise funds for bushfire victims.

HAPPY DOLLARS
Chris Back won the wine and promptly auctioned it off declaring Ian Fairnie had won it with a secret bid disguised as wiping his nose.  Turned out to be a real boost to the coffers* as Ian also paid up for inadvertently accusing Chris Caithness of bigamy in his write up of her presentation in the latest Applecross Advocate.
Hamish Turner is happy to be back from New Zealand, where he and Chris celebrated 44 years of marriage, and Gordon Dunbar is happy to have his boat back after repairs.
*This week we banked $40 in Happy Dollars ($28 last week) and the Silver Teapot yielded $38.45 v $11.15 last week.
New Jacaranda Festival Sponsorship Agreement  signed with City of Melville
Following our breakfast meeting on Tuesday, the Jacaranda Festival committee met with Cathy Day representing the City of Melville.  Cathy had some excellent news in relation to the City's sponsorship of the festival with a new agreement for a second three year period from 2020 -2022. There was also an increase in sponsorship for which the committee unanmiously agreed for president Barry to sign the new agreement.

Cathy said the City is  very supportive of this annual event which draws community people together and highlights a precinct to many visitors to the district from across Perth.  Further to this the Jacaranda Festival aligns with the City's vision of showcasing a safe, liveable, community-orientated and sustainable locality.

Jacaranda Festival committee chair, Kenn Williams, thanked the City of Melville for their continued financial support and to Cathy for her tremendous support for Applecross Rotary and the Jacaranda Festival.
Untreatable Sepsis kills more people that all cancers combined!

And that’s why Applecross Rotary is trying to get the attention of Rotary International, via a Rotary Action Group (RAG), and demonstrating what can be done about this fact, via a project in Nepal.
President Nominee Peter McEwen reported on his recent fact-finding trip to Nepal, funding by a District Grant, to determine if the conditions required for Global Grant, to improve diagnostic capabilities, could reduce the rate of maternal and infant mortality from 239/100,000 live births to less than 10, as is the case in Australia.  Most of the deaths in Nepal are due to untreatable sepsis caused by multi drug resistant infectious agents - AMR.
The burden of AMR is high in Nepal due to inappropriate use of antibiotics, poor health hygiene and sanitation, and poor infection control programs .

January Sundowner @ 'The Dunbars'
The sunset was magnificent for a an excellent turnout of members for the January sundowner.  A huge thanks to Di and Gordon for their hospitality.  Gordon used this opportunity to open a Binduli Wines magnum that Ralph Fardon won at the 2012 district conference in Kalgoorlie and sold to Gordon on his return.

Short report from Connor (RYE)

ROTARY EXCHANGE WEEK 1

GOOD
  • My host family have been really nice so far, they have helped me decorate my room, find a warm jacket, they took my horse riding on my first full day which is something my host sisters do frequently. I also went to my host brothers soccer match which went all the way to penalties, unfortunately they lost. So all is well with the family, and we’ve had many laughs talking about Australia and me fumbling my way through basic german.
BAD
  • Its ridiculously cold here, I’m sure I will get used to it but it’s very strange because its so cold outside then really warm inside everywhere, so you are constantly layering up then taking those layers off inside
INTERESTING
  • I have taken up playing Badminton 3 times a week, I’ve played a little at home before and surprisingly they don’t have AFL here haha. I am also exploring whether I could join a basketball team, so hopefully I can avoid putting on too much exchange weight.

Cheers, Connor :)
