Dear Rotarians and friends

How fortunate we were to enjoy such a beautiful day for the penultimate Perth Makers Market for the season. It certainly seemed well-supported in patronage and thanks to the great teamwork from Applecross Rotary, Rotarian friends from other clubs and the team from Waylen Bay and Fremantle Sea Scouts the parking ran smoothly and minor challenges promptly addressed, as always. We look forward to hearing the financial results very soon. There were certainly opportunities for some levity around the gate collections. Particularly noteworthy was the highly developed competitive streak in some of our newer members, which hopefully we can turn to our advantage over time. Well done one and all!

Another thank you to Ray Philp for opening the doors to the Manning Rippers Football Clubrooms once again as we sought a replacement venue for our meeting with Dome unavailable during the school holidays. A reminder to bring your coffees and pastries with you from the Welwyn Road shopping Centre as per the earlier message.

Together in action

Perth Makers Market 12 April

Our RYE Essi Mustonen helping out at Sunday's markets

Well, that was a pleasant surprise. Despite all the disruption caused by the Goolugatup Lowerlands Renewal Project, we still managed to deliver our usual professional parking management for Sunday’s increasingly popular Perth Makers Market.

Market patrons once again showed their appreciation, contributing a very worthwhile donation total that will go straight back into supporting our community and international Rotary projects.

A huge shout‑out to the volunteers from Applecross Rotary, Rotary Attadale, Rotary E‑WA, Waylen Bay Sea Scouts and Fremantle Sea Scouts. Your ongoing commitment makes this possible.

One challenge that continues to grow is how we manage the physical workload involved in the Saturday and Sunday setup, and the pack‑up on Sunday afternoon.

While we can comfortably resource the parking hours with the support of our members, partners, Friends of Applecross Rotary, E‑WA and Attadale Rotary, and the WBSS and FSS, we are still relying on some of our parking volunteers to also handle the heavy lifting for setup and pack‑up. This is becoming too much for several of our long‑serving regulars who have carried this load for many years.

It’s time for us to think outside the box and explore how we can engage reliable and capable people to assist with the more physical aspects of the operation.

I would really appreciate your suggestions.

This activity remains an important fundraiser for our club at a time when generating income is becoming increasingly difficult. It is also a fantastic opportunity to interact with the public, showcase what Rotary is all about, and hopefully attract new members or supporters who want to contribute to our projects.

And of course, one of the great things about Rotary is the fellowship — making a difference, working together, and having fun along the way.
For example, nothing beats enjoying an ice‑cold beer after packing everything back into storage following another successful day raising funds at the Perth Makers Market.

Outgoing RYE Update from Briohny

Hello Applecross Rotary,

I have been in Finland now for almost 2 months and have already experienced so many new things.

Things I have tried include;
  •  Downhill skiing
  • Snowboarding
  • Cross country skiing
  • Ice skating (on an outside rink)
  • Sauna
  • Walking on the Baltic Sea
  • Walking on ice
  • ice fishing
  • A bunch of traditional Finnish food including Pulla
  • Gone to a Finnish theatre performance

I have been to Tampere, Turku, Helsinki. I have also travelled through Espoo a lot and a smaller place called Lahti.

I have settled in nicely with my first host family and we enjoyed watching the Winter Olympics together. The language is very different but I am learning quickly (somewhat) and attend a lesson every Tuesday with the other exchange students in the Helsinki region. I have got a good group of friends at school and we are planning to go to a concert at the end of this month together.

Finnish winter is already ending and slowly moving into Spring. During my first week of school, I was leaving in the morning for the bus in the dark and walking through the snow. It slowly transitioned to light and now the paths which were once covered in snow have mostly melted. There was a good two days where it was so slippery I chose to walk through some snow piles rather than the path so I wouldn't slip.

It has already been such an amazing experience and I will definitely be travelling back to Finland when I am older.

This is an email I sent at the beginning of March but it must not have gone through.

I will get working on an update over the weekend with photos of a few more things I have been doing  as the climate has properly changed now that we are in spring. I will include some stuff I did over Easter when I went to Athens with my host family.

Regards,
Briohny

In autumn each year South of Perth Yacht Club host “Cruising Butterflies” to take children with life-long health issues onto the Swan River on members boats to enjoy a morning of fun on the water.  This is a partnership with
Kiind (a support organization from Perth Children’s Hospital) and  sponsors including Applecross and Melville Rotary Clubs.

Kiind invite about 150 children along with their parents, siblings and carers to attend this special day  for the children that also gives their families a short respite from the 24-hour a day caring duty.

After the morning on the water there will be a sausage sizzle lunch,  live entertainment and special guests and events.  The day will wind up early in the afternoon.

Applecross Rotary, as in previous years, have been tasked with the BBQ duties, cooking and serving sausages in a bun (supplied by SoPYC) and to organize car parking, both inside SoPYC and on the Heathcote Lower Land.  We have been asked to bring our Rotary branded marquees to hold the registration and welcome desks and to also bring along our Rotary banners.

Kenn's Musings

KEEP THE DATE.

Thursday, the 21st of May, at South of Perth Yacht Club, will be the Melville Cockburn Chamber of Commerce Business Awards Presentation Evening.

AxR, along with Melville and Attadale, will be presenting one of these awards and it will be great to have some solid Club support.

We will also be unveiling our joint relationship builder with the MCCC, aiming to have businesses better understand the benefits of a social licence and 'give back' to our local communities, and joining with Rotary in this endeavour.

Lots happening in this space... stay tuned.

Kenn.

Adventurer/ Boat Builder

Chris was such an entertaining speaker in September that we have asked him back to give us Part 2 of his adventures.

Chris Bowman has had a lifelong passion in travel, adventure and exploration.

A highlight of Chris’s boatbuilding career was the 63-foot locally sourced schooner christened Water Pearl he built for Bob Dylan in Bequia, an island in the Grenadines.

Chris moved to Fremantle in 1988 and still works in boatbuilding, and he was engaged on construction of the Endeavour replica.
