It will be all hands on deck this week, as we put the final finishing touches in place for our 21st Jacaranda Festival this Saturday.
Our JacFest leader Kenn will provide us with a full briefing tomorrow. The forecast is for a sunny 32C.
The Melville Volunteers Sundowner was held last Tuesday. The Presidents from our “cluster” clubs (Applecross, Attadale, Booragoon, Melville) outlined each clubs respective activities to the volunteers.
Six members from our Club supported the event.
Many thanks to AG Kenn for organizing the function.
Last Thursday, Applecross SHS hosted a year 9 speed careers day and Rotary were invited to participate. Melville and Applecross Clubs presented Rotary, and provided over 320 year 9 students with details of our youth and leadership programmes.
A similar event is planned for this Friday, 26 November at Leeming SHS. Many thanks to PE and Youth Director Logan and Vocational Services Director Andrew for your efforts.
Annual General Meeting on 23 November 2021
Our AGM has been rescheduled to 23 November (tomorrow).
If any member would like to take on a new role in 2022/23, then please contact Logan or myself.
With the year winding down, there is still plenty to look forward to:
  • 23 November – AGM and JacFest briefing
  • 27 November – 21st Jacaranda Festival
  • 30 November – Evening meeting, Dr Mark Duncan-Smith, WA President AMA
  • 9 December    – AxR Christmas Lunch Rooftop Bar, East Fremantle
  • 14 December  - Secret Santa (last meeting of 2021)
  • 19 December  - Perth Makers Market
Whale Watch Western Australia
Our guests for last meeting were Jade and Gemma from Whale Watch Western Australia.
Bruce Uren was the host for the meeting and summed up their presentation when emailing our thanks to them saying:
"I extend a hearty thank you for a sensational presentation this morning. It was very professional & informative. For me, the highlight was the underwater photography.  I felt that had we not needed to let people get off to work/other commitments we could have chatted for quite some time".
Their family history goes back 6 generations and all have been associated with the waters of Australia through the pearling, crayfishing, fishing, tourism, transport and ferry industries.  Today their primary focus is on whales,  dolphins and porpoises of WA and provide world class education and viewing.  Their tours depart from Fremantle, Bremer Bay and Augusta.
We were shown some spectacular underwater and drone video that they have taken during their tours and that are available on their website.
Their presentation is also available on our Applecross Rotary Members Facebook group.
The 21st Rotary Jacaranda Festival will be held on the 27th of November at its well established home in Applecross Village, and promises to be bigger and better than ever!!

“What started out with very humble beginnings in year 2000 and is now recognised as one of the BEST community Festivals in Perth, continues to charm all who attend,” Kenn Williams, from the organising committee said. “Set  amongst the shady flowering Jacaranda trees and commercial hub of Ardross St., without doubt, it really does take some beating “

Certainly Covid-19 WA Health protocols must be again followed, but it will not have the crowd limitations of last year, as it currently stands. Only a QR Code check-in will be required, as for any other public event.
A timely reminder of the importance of our One Health project that we passionately promoted at JacFest 2019 BC (Before COVID).  Relevant then and more than relevant now. PP Dr Ian Fairnie has provided the following link to a media release on World Antimicrobial Awareness Week 2021.  Click here
Easiest way to find contact details for other members and to check-out club event details.  Ray Philp is available if you need to assistance to set up.

A warm welcome to our newest member Michael Smith who was inducted into the club at our last meeting by Assistant Governor Kenn Williams.
