And he also won the Heads ’n Tails which kicks off all of our meetings!
Rene Bauer is the Marketing Director for the Frankland River Olive Company, producers of Jingilli Extra Virgin Olive Oil, a product in high demand here and overseas, especially China, Japan, Vietnam and New Zealand.
Olive Oil is a product of the Mediterranean countries: Spain, Portugal, Italy and Greece in particular. So it’s no wonder olives are easy to grow in our Mediterranean climate.
And it’s really no wonder that WA was the first in the world to introduce mechanical harvesting, which also ensures a higher quality product with better flavour, freshness and nutrient control. Harvesting occurs April-
May, and the olive trees live thousands of years. (Maybe that’s why olive trees are frequently mentioned throughout the Bible.)
The differences in quality relate to the level of oleic acid in the product, with Extra Virgin Olive Oil containing no more than 0.8% oleic acid. It is the product of the first press of the harvested olives, and carried out at less than 7 degrees C. Oleic acid is a naturally occurring, monounsaturated omega-9 fatty acid, abundant in olive oil and other plant and animal fats, known in particular for its potential health benefits.
Extra Virgin Olive Oil protects against heart disease, controlling “bad” cholesterol, lowering blood pressure, improving blood vessel health, and managing blood clotting thus reducing the likelihood heart attacks and stroke.
Virgin Olive Oil, less expensive to buy, has no more than 2% oleic acid, then down the list is Refined Olive Oil, and finally Olive Pomace Oil, the result of the final press of the olive fruit.
Oh, and Rene wasn’t the only winner at our recent meeting; we all won a bottle of Jingilli Extra Virgin Olive Oil, thank you Rene!
So that’s two weeks in a row members have taken home a gift. In case you forgot last week it was a Fancy Plants Chocolate Silky Pod.
