Dear Rotarians and Friends,

With the 2024/25 Rotary year coming to a close, Margaret is gearing up to create a team to take the Club forward to the next chapter. For those that would like to help her or just want to know more about the different roles that there are in the Club, next Saturday morning, there will be an Assembly of different Rotary Club leaders at the Willetton Basketball Club, 58 Burrendah Boulevard, Willetton (opposite Southlands Shopping Centre).

In the past, Assembly has included a message from the incoming RI President as well as information about what is happening at District level and break out sessions relating to each area of focus within Rotary. Free bookings may be made through Trybooking:

As you will see from the page there are also country Assemblies for those that can’t make it on Saturday.

Also, next weekend, the Perth Makers’ Market carparking will be held on Sunday with many of us going to be involved, thank you. On Sunday 11th April we will be helping with the parking and provision of a BBQ for children with special needs through the Cruising Butterflies programme – once again helpers will be needed to continue the success that it has been in the past. We have been discussing with Curtin University that students will be asked to create a video of our activities to help promote our club so we expect there to be some students filming us.

Don’t be Fooled and Keep the Magic of Rotary happening!

Yours in Rotary,

Co-Presidents Tom and Murray

GUEST SPEAKER: Rene Bauer
Rene’s on a winner!

And he also won the Heads ’n Tails which kicks off all of our meetings!

Rene Bauer is the Marketing Director for the Frankland River Olive Company, producers of Jingilli Extra Virgin Olive Oil, a product in high demand here and overseas, especially China, Japan, Vietnam and New Zealand.

Olive Oil is a product of the Mediterranean countries: Spain, Portugal, Italy and Greece in particular.  So it’s no wonder olives are easy to grow in our Mediterranean climate.

And it’s really no wonder that WA was the first in the world to introduce mechanical harvesting, which also ensures a higher quality product with better flavour, freshness and nutrient control.  Harvesting occurs April-
May, and the olive trees live thousands of years.  (Maybe that’s why olive trees are frequently mentioned throughout the Bible.)

The differences in quality relate to the level of oleic acid in the product, with Extra Virgin Olive Oil containing no more than 0.8% oleic acid. It is the product of the first press of the harvested olives, and carried out at less than 7 degrees C.  Oleic acid is a naturally occurring, monounsaturated omega-9 fatty acid, abundant in olive oil and other plant and animal fats, known in particular for its potential health benefits.

Extra Virgin Olive Oil protects against heart disease, controlling “bad” cholesterol, lowering blood pressure, improving blood vessel health, and managing blood clotting thus reducing the likelihood heart attacks and stroke.

Virgin Olive Oil, less expensive to buy, has no more than 2% oleic acid, then down the list is Refined Olive Oil, and finally Olive Pomace Oil, the result of the final press of the olive fruit.

Oh, and Rene wasn’t the only winner at our recent meeting; we all won a bottle of Jingilli Extra Virgin Olive Oil, thank you Rene!

So that’s two weeks in a row members have taken home a gift. In case you forgot last week it was a Fancy Plants Chocolate Silky Pod.

ROTARY ART SHOW AND SALE (50th Year)

Every year in June the Rotary Clubs of Melville and Applecross get together to put on an Art Show at the Westfield Booragoon Shopping Centre. The aim of the show is to:

"To encourage Artists and afford them the opportunity to exhibit their works to the public."

Its nearing that time of the year again.

The combined Applecross / Melville Rotary Clubs will be hosting the annual Art Show from 8th to 15th June. The event is held in the display area of the Westfield Garden City Shopping Centre in front of Woolworths.

This event provides a wonderful platform to promote our local artists.

We normally have around 450 paintings on display and in so doing promote about 150 artists.

The setting up, the manning of the display – and finally the dismantling, consumes considerable time and effort. Consequently your support would be appreciated and it’s the old saying “….many hands……”.

Applecross Rotary's responsibility is for the setting up, the manning of the display and finally dismantling on the Sunday afternoon. Also manning the display on the Monday ,Wednesday,  Friday  and the Sunday morning, with Melville Rotary responsible for the alternate days.

A blank roster will be circulated at the end of the month. Roster stints include a range of options ie:  morning / afternoon and evening in 3 hour time slots. This way the roster caters for everyone.

The purpose of this note is to ask you to diarise a day /days and then once the roster is out you can indicate what times best suit.

In closing – as this is our 50th year so can you give some thought as to how best we can advertise this achievement.

Looking forward to your suggestions.

Thanks

Hamish
