Well not quite the weekend I was hoping for.

With regards to our Youth Exchange student, his visit will be delayed as he is attending World Scout Jamboree this means his arrival is delayed until late August. We are still on the lookout for a host family. Last week the zone youth / vocational teams caught up and also discussed some potential options when it comes to finding a host family.

At last week's meeting our guest speaker was Senator for Western Australia Matt O'Sullivan and he was introduced by Kenn Williams.

Matt is currently Deputy Opposition Whip in the Senate, Chair of the Education and Employment References Committee and Deputy Chair of the Education and Employment Legislation Committee.  Entering parliament on July 2, 2019, Matt is passionate about economic development and opportunity, employment services reform and early childhood education. We thank Matt for making time to join us for breakfast and providing a very interesting and informative presentation on his background and how he is representing Western Australians in Canberra.

This week we’ve got Cameron the Magician talking and very much looking forward to it.

Hope everyone has a fantastic week and looking forward to seeing everyone this Tuesday.

Represent Australia at Rotary’s biggest event of the year!

The Rotary International Convention is the biggest event of the year and it’s coming to us in Australia, 27-31 May. Thousands of Rotary members and Rotaractors from across the globe will be arriving in Melbourne, giving us a tremendous opportunity to welcome, network and learn from fellow people of action.

Let’s show our Australian spirit while enjoying the extraordinary convention that will feature notable speakers, energising breakout sessions, and ample opportunities to brainstorm ideas for Doing Good in the World. Among the speakers and learning opportunities scheduled
  • Keynote speaker Leymah Gbowee, Nobel Peace laureate from Liberia
  • Climate activist Makeeyat Dramani Sam of Ghana
  • Breakout sessions on leadership, membership, service and projects, the environment, public image, and more

Whether we're on the convention floor, in the House of Friendship, or at one of the exciting events planned by the Host Organising Committee, the 2023 Rotary convention is the ideal place to share ideas and expertise. It’s also our chance to be a champion for Rotary in Australia and make an impact that lasts far beyond four days in Melbourne.

So register today for savings! The reduced rate expires 31 March.

Applecross Rotary well represented at Foundation Dinner
Our CLUB was well represented at the 2023 Rotary Foundation Dinner held at the Royal Perth Golf Club last Friday evening.  This was the first formal Foundation event since COVID interrupted our lives.  Those of us who attended had the opportunity to hear from the person with the ultimate responsibility for the administration of our international charity, Ian Riseley.  Ian was President of Rotary International in 2017/2018 and is currently Chair of Trustees of the Rotary Foundation.  Ian's theme as President of Rotary International was 'Rotary Making a Difference' and he has certainly done that.

Question time gave Chris Whelan and Erin Hegarty an opportunity to promote our Foundation supported project in partnership with MAMA Respond International. Chris requested people attending the dinner who were going to the International Conference in Melbourne for support manning our booth at the 'House of Friendship' promoting the 'MAMA Respond Kenyan project.  He received a number of volunteers that will make the task easier for himself, Erin and Mike smith so they can also participate in some of the conference sessions.

The Rotary Foundation ... what is It?
The Foundation Dinner held on Friday night, and which AxR supported well, may well be an enigma in terms of what it does for many of us.

However, rest assured that this is one of the most important financial support systems run and managed by Rotary International, and focussed on improving the world’s humanitarian never ending needs and demands.

There are seven focus areas for the Foundation.
                1. Peace and conflict prevention/resolution.
                2. Disease prevention and Treatment.
                3. Water and Sanitation
                4. Maternal and Child Health.
                5. Basic Education and Literacy.
                6. Economic and Community Development.
                7. Environmental.

The Foundation is run by an International Trustee Rotary Board of 15 appointed members, and has a very close and working relationship with the UN, UNICEF and WHO, amongst others.

Whilst our 34,000 Rotary Clubs are charged with supporting the Foundation financially, most of its money is provided by generous benefactors, of whom The Gates Foundation would probably be the best known for their enormous contributions towards the ongoing  End Polio Now effort.

AxR has been a very strong financial supporter of both the End Polio Now Foundation project, along with an annual commitment to the great work that is done by the Foundation Grants Program, of which we have been a major beneficiary with our many International Projects over the years.

So, when you are building up a temperature and sweat at the Markets, or the JacFest, just pause for a moment and appreciate the value our hard yards help achieve for a very needy world thru the Rotary Foundation!
