GUEST SPEAKER: Tom Atkinson
President Tom reveals what matters to him: Values Matter

President Tom with special guest Sara David AM from Living Child

It is not at all unusual for a Club President to speak to members, but Tom’s recent presentation gave members an insight into what he really enjoys about his job at WA Cricket: it puts Values First.

There are lots of pop management books around that promote this, online and as audio tapes.  But at WA Cricket, it’s not just talked about during Strategic Planning workshops, it’s the lived culture - and it works!

Just look at some of the Outcomes that have been earned through this culture in the last few years:
  • 3 Sheffield Shields
  • 3 Marsh Cups
  • 2 Men’s Big Bash League Championships
  • 1 Women’s Big Bash League Championship
  • Drawing 50,000+ people to finals that are played at Optus Oval (Sydney struggles to get 20,000 at its finals)
Fun Fact on this last dot point?  And who determines how many people come to these big games?  Mum does!  Seems like the days when cricket was a game watched by old white blokes, belong in the last century!

So what does Tom do at WA Cricket?  Club development.  Helping clubs support their volunteers, and with conflict resolution.  He helps people who want to do things right, listening to their ideas and helps make them better.  He encourages clubs to welcome autistic kids, and to sign up to be a "Good Sports” club.  98% of WA clubs have done this and are thus committed to something bigger than themselves.

After the meeting, I asked Tom who was the key to all the recent success of WA Cricket - Christina Matthews was his immediate response.  Christina was CEO from 2011 until March this year.  Apart from being a very successful administrator and inspirational leader, she is Australia's most capped female Test player, and holds the record for the most dismissals by a wicketkeeper in Women’s Test Matches.  She also played in the 1988 and 1993 World Cups.

Her mantra for her time leading WA Cricket?: Cricket is for everyone.

Kenn's Musings!
Now that football is all over for local team supporters for another year… boo hoo. .. we can prep up for a busy month ahead! (not so surprising really!)

1. District Governors Visit.

Pat Schraven, DG for 9423, will be visiting on Monday evening the 16th of September, for a 6 for 6.30 start at our regular meeting spot, The Dome, Mt Pleasant. Pat will no doubt update us on her planning and progress for this year in our District as it enters the vital 2nd year of the Regionalisation Pilot project. Melville and Canning River Rotary Clubs will join us for this event. AxR meeting for the following morning, the 17th, has been cancelled.

2. THURSDAY, 19th of September 6 for 6.30 pm, again, Dome Mt Pleasant.

Farewell for our outstanding Exchange Student Valentin.

It is hard to believe that Valentin’s year with us has almost passed, and it will be truly sad to have him pack out back to his hometown in Germany. He certainly has had a wealth of great experiences in our wonderful country and has put back into AxR on every available occasion.
Thank you, Valentin, for being such an outstanding ambassador for Rotary, and your country. We look forward to seeing you back again with us if family visiting plans develop.

There will also be another “special moment” to this evening … no early announcements!

3. Perth Makers Market will follow on Sunday, 22nd of September.
Some of our regular helpers will not be available, so it will be all who can please be available.

Kenn.

The Valentin Report
Bunbury O Bunbury you are so beautiful and full of action and fun.
On the weekend I had the opportunity to go with PP Ray Philp and his wife Val down to visit their Son’s family in Bunbury.
This trip just happened because of Ray’s generous service throughout the year as he gave me a bike which I took all over the place in Perth. He is not the only one in his family who likes biking and mountain biking and this is why I landed in Bunbury.

Dean, Rays son invited me to come along and go for a mountain bike ride with him through some of the greatest trails and forest alongside the Wellington Dam.

As Dean is a passionate Downhill biker, he got an electric MTB to have more energy down the hill and yeah it makes everything a lot easier and it makes more fun. Riding through all the curves and jumping through the nature was incredible.

Meanwhile Ray explored the surrounding Nature and took some action shots for us riding.

As we were finding another trail in the area I said to Dean, that a typical day here in Australia, would be one where you go out and explore nature and then come back home and have a Barbie with your mates. And this is exactly what we did. We went to his freshly married mate Steve and his wife Aia to inaugurate their new flat and BBQ. Overall, it was a great time learning new skills, getting to know new great people and having fun with Dean, Grace and their kids Olive and James.

Furthermore, I went on a self-organised bike tour through the city of Bunbury with the best tour guide Ray, who showed me all the great spots of the city.

Thank you a lot for taking me south to show me more of the beauty of Australia and for taking the best action shot of me riding the bike, Ray and Dean.

Cheers
Valentin

And I just add a quick note.
Last Friday we had our Athletics carnival and I became officially 3rd of the year 11 discus but unofficially threw further
than the number 1, so this afternoon we will see if I’ll make the Interschool athletic team to represent scotch college in two weeks’ time at the PSA Athletics.

We are invited ....
Good morning members of Applecross Rotary Club

I am writing to you, inviting your members and friends to the concert (see attached) on Sunday 8th September 2024.  I am a member of the E-WA Rotary Club and work at the Makers Market on a regular basis.  With Heather Anderson, also EWA, we support a brother and sister in a hostel in northern Thailand. Without sponsorship these children would not have a very bright future.
It would be great to see some of you at the concert - entry is by donation.  Could you please distribute this email and poster to your members and friends, and hopefully we will see some of you there.
Regards
Glynis Armstrong

Borderless Friendship WA Inc is a not-for-profit organisation established to provide the best possible opportunities for healthy, safe and rewarding lives for hill tribe children and youth. Please see video link below to view the wonderful work this organisation support.

The children of the hill tribes in Northern Thailand need our help.

Many of these children are victims of the Myanmar War.
Many are orphaned due to their parents dying young, often from AIDS. They are often stateless, with no official identities. That means no passport, no birth certificate and no access to health care or education.

Their day-to-day life is often untenable. They face issues such as:
• being orphaned due to parents dying young, often from AIDS
• sex trafficking of young females
• being recruited to carry drugs
• extreme poverty

You can help by attending ‘Chords for Borderless Friendship’ a concert which aims to raise precious funds for these children.
