President Barry opening the meeting with 21 other Applecross Rotarians plus guest speaker Pat Colgan and regular visitor Kevin Sansome from Toastmasters International.

After congratulating Associate Member Heather Inglis on her birthday coming up, as well as the 68th wedding anniversary of Bruce and Helen James, President Barry asked members present to give a personal update on life during a pandemic.

SO WHAT’S HAPPENING?
Several reported on Mothers’ Day ranging from enjoying the company of great grandchildren to mothers visiting them to play with baby Harry Atkinson!
This also gave Tom Atkinson the opportunity to let all know that the Karoonda Sports Association rooms are available for functions like our Rotary Exchange night in early March.

Kenn Williams reported needing shoulder surgery after a fall while fishing for whiting near Rottnest, while Ian Lander and Clive Pearson reported to going back to work.  Meanwhile Chris Dawson is still at work but now with 80% of day students, and boarders due to start arriving back at Santa Maria College from next week.

Gordon Dunbar thanked Ben Morton’s office for their help in getting sailing friends repatriated back to Perth from St Kitts.

John Henderson and Ian Fairnie both reported on their “Helens”.  While Helen Henderson is heading home this weekend, that’s unlikely in the case of Helen Jones, who may have picked up an infection while in hospital.

Ian took the opportunity of reminding everyone that today was the 200th anniversary of the birth of Florence Nightingale, and to praise the role that nurses play in our society, especially now during the pandemic.

Bruce James advised that he and Helen are leaving Strome Rd after 53 years, and they will take up residence at a retirement village near Garden City.

Tony Haeusler made an “appearance” for the first time in the Zoom era, audio only for now.  He reported he has very sore knees after a stress test on the treadmill!

Peter McEwen was asked to comment on the issue for WA barley farmers due to the China market disruption.  Peter advised the following article is balanced and highlights the political complexities - click here.
THANK GOD FOR ST PATS – Guest Speaker Dr Patrick Colgan AM, Board Chairman
*Pat has significant experience across the community and government sectors, including Chairing the State and Federal Australian Dental Associations and is a former member of the State Dentists’ Registration Board. In 2001, he was made a Member of the Order of Australia for his contribution to the Australian Community.

St Patrick’s Community Support Centre lies at the heart of the Fremantle community.  It started in 1972, when a frail elderly man appeared at the door of the Presbytery seeking help. He was cold, hungry and in serious need of care.
