Tuesday was a busy meeting as we conducted our AGM and had the recently elected City of Melville Mayor, the Hon.George Gear as our guest speaker. We also welcomed our guests Cecil and Elizabeth Aaron.  Cecil has been nominated for membership under the category of Civil Engineering and Elizabeth has been invited to join the Club as an Associate Member.
The Australian Government Department of Health is preparing some social media messaging to mark ANTIBIOTIC AWARENESS WEEK 2019 (18-24 November) and have requested that we help disseminate these messages through sharing Health's Facebook posts on our FaceBook page during that week.  They have also suggested the following infographics available on amr.gov.au to circulate during our AMR Aware promotion at the Rotary Jacaranda Festival:
Congratulations to Peter McEwen on his nomination and election at the AGM as President Elect for 2020 - 2021.

Guest Speaker:  City of Melville Mayor George Gear
George, a long-time Melville resident and former federal minister, is certainly highly qualified for the position of Mayor.  He was a federal MP from 1983 to 1996.  During this time he was Government Whip from May 1990 to March 1993 and Assistant Treasurer from 1993 to 1996.
He started working life as an apprentice electrician progressing through as a teacher of electrical trades before running for Parliament. George's experience through contesting four close federal elections,  taught him "the power from listening to people".  During the council elections he doorknocked around 3000 residences and businesses.  Now that he is mayor he plans to invite 250 ratepayers each week to his office to continue "listening to the people".  He is hoping for around a 10% response to his weekly invitation.
George was asked if he would be accessable through social media, especially for time-poor business people.  George admitted he was not very active on social media except for keeping in touch with his son and daughter who both live overseas.  His preference is communicating face to face,  however digital access to him would be availabe through his council support staff.
George said he would be asking council to measure their service delivery and administative costs to drive giving ratepayers better value for money and mending relations with residents.  He would also be seeking professional advice on residents' concerns on getting good value for space from developers (especially involving high-rise projects in the Canning Bridge precinct).

Applecross Rotary Farewell Jan and John Hosking
At our recent monthly networking sundowner hosted by Liz and David Palmer, we took the opportunity of farewelling long time member John Hosking and his wife Jan.  They are moving to Adelaide and will be greatly missed.  John has been a member of Rotary in WA for 45 years, joining Applecross Rotary in 1990 from Thornlie Rotary (now Southern Districts) and serving as Applecross Rotary President in 2006 -7.  The Club wish Jan and John all the best for their new life in Adelaide.

One billion down, billions more to go: Container deposit scheme celebrates its first year
People have been flocking to reverse vending centres to exchange their containers. More than $100 million has been paid out to schools, charities and households throughout Queensland as the container fund scheme celebrates its first birthday. One billion containers have been deposited since the container refund scheme began on November 1 last year, with more than 330 designated container refund points (CRP) rolled out throughout the state. Container Exchange (CoEx) manager Adam Nicholson said
