PP Hamish gave last week's meeting a first hand account of the damage to the township of Kalbarri by cyclone Seroja.  Hamish left Kalbarri at 1pm last Monday arriving home at 7.15pm following a "really scary night".  He reported that the "place is not only wrecked but no power, no phone and no electricity".

Hamish has suggested the club consider a donation to the Kalbarri SES as a way to satisfy the "immediate need" of Kalbarri residents as they are the only community focused organisation in Kalbarri.  During the storm they were out helping and Hamish says he saw their lights everywhere and thought they must have been crazy to go out in that weather!

Community Services Director Clive Pearson will put a motion for board consideration.

The above picture is some of the damage to the API Holiday Homes in Kalbarri.  As I have booked one of these homes for the October school holidays the API CEO send me an email with the following light hearted description of the damage -

Firstly, I’d like to say that I’m extremely grateful that no death or major injuries have occurred from the cyclone that ripped through the wonderful town of Kalbarri. I’m further grateful that no members have been hurt in any way, however the town as a whole has not been so lucky. In terms of the API units there is apparently a new pole now sticking out of the roof of unit 2, whereas unit 4 is missing a roof altogether and has a new 2m x 2m natural skylight. The central gazebo is now missing (roof returned but that’s all) and the BBQ’s flew away...to somewhere. Someone’s shed is in our courtyard and there is random metal and twisted pipes everywhere. We have someone else’s shed parts on our roof and someone’s solar panels through some of our windows and in the courtyard. We have exposed wires, many roof tiles missing and at the moment the venue is very much closed to the public.

Save the date for the Brightwater Oats St Tour, Thursday 13th May 2021 at 10am.  Following a presentation in September 2020 about Brightwater's Music Pharmacy by Hayley Antipas, Rotary has been invited to a tour of their Oats St facility followed by morning tea.  Let Liz know if you would like to attend.

Congratulations to this week's Footy Margins winner Doug Telfer with 27 points.  Click here for previous winners and allocated margins for participants.

Congratulations to PP Tony Haeusler, celebrating his 30th Rotary Anniversary.
Tony joined Moora Rotary on April 12th 1991 and was their President in 1995-96.  When Tony retired from farming he moved to Perth in 1999 and joined the Leeming Rotary Club. Unfortunately the club folded in 2005 when the Applecross Rotary Club was fortunate to gain the services of Tony.
Tony has been recognised in 2011 and and 2015 with a PHF.
Your're never too young or too old to start writing!
l-r PP Ian Fairnie, Steve Rogers, President Ray Philp

You're never too young or too old to start writing - was the theme for a well received presentation at our last meeting from author Steve Rogers.

Steve graduated from Muresk Agricultural College in Western Australia before embarking on his diverse career as a jackaroo, farmer, broadcaster, retailer, journalist, teacher/technician (working alongside Ian Fairnie) and TV presenter. Thirty years ago he established a video production company, which has taken him to remote locations throughout Australia, South East Asia and Africa. Recently he turned his hand to writing crime fiction, with stories set in WA, including Death in a Matchbox, An Artefact of Interest, and Truck That..

Steve is very happy to sell his books through the club if anyone wants one - or they are available via Amazon/ Kindle.

Steve is also a recognised "bush poet".  His take on the 2019 AFL season can be read here.
