Co - President's Notes Tom Atkinson & Murray McKay
Dear Rotarians and Friends,

We are in the midst of school holidays, with young families roaming the streets in amongst a litany of children's activities and parents taking leave to spend time with their kids. The sense of community is rarely stronger than at times like these, with major events like the Royal Show providing a centerpiece to a shared community purpose.

Indeed, Applecross Rotary, through the Perth Makers Market, was a beneficiary of this positive community vibe, experiencing increased contributions over the long weekend which will be directed back into the community. We extend a heartfelt thankyou to all who volunteered and assisted in this outcome.

A number of Applecross Rotarians will also be supporting our friends at Ascot Rotary at their annual Bricktober event at Curtin University this coming weekend. Another great community event inspired by goodwill and the school holiday perspective.

May the contributions of our fellow community members in support of worthy causes long continue.

Yours in Rotary,

Co-Presidents Tom and Murray

At the airport with Rotarians Graeme Fardon & Lorri Brazier
Dear Tilmann and Silvia

Tillman: Thank you for your message left on the Zoom Chat file after our Rotary Club officially farewelled Valentin on Thursday evening.

The farewell gift he received was a piece of jewellery to wear, a silver boomerang.

The original wooden boomerangs were used by Australian Aborigines 65,000 years ago, to hunt kangaroos.  The unique feature of some boomerangs is that if they miss the prey, they fly through the air back to the sender.  Our gift signifies the wish of all of us, that Valentin comes back to us one day.

In his original application for the Long Term Exchange, you wrote that Valentin is a joyful boy whose family loves him very much.  After having him with us for 12 months, I can say with confidence, so do many members of Applecross Rotary, who are also very proud of what he has achieved while we had care of him.

Valentin is the first Rotary Exchange student we have hosted for many years, and it is very likely we will continue to do so now, thanks to the goodwill he has created and the friendships he developed with our members.  Right from the start of his time with us, he made sure he could attend nearly all of our weekly breakfast meetings, and he also began contributing to our weekly Bulletin, the Applecross Advocate.  He saw himself as a member of the Club, not just a visiting exchange student, and took the opportunity to regularly brief members at our meetings with photos and videos of what he had been doing.  He also volunteered his time with our annual fundraiser, the Rotary Jacaranda Festival in November, and helping at the regular Perth Makers’ Market, including one  yesterday!

Two of his host families are involved with Sea Scouts, and he really enjoyed becoming fully involved, as well as learning to sail while he was here.  He also embarked on the journey to becoming a King Scout, the highest scouting award available in countries that are part of the British Commonwealth of nations.  He used his skills in helping organise a hike on a section of the Bibbulmun Track along the southern coast.  He was invited to join one of our members and his wife on their annual trip to Broome in the far north of Western Australia, and found out there were Pallottine missionaries from Germany involved in working with Aboriginal communities in nearby Beagle Bay over 125 years ago.  In 1916 they designed and built a beautiful church, which was internally decorated by the local community with “Mother of Pearl” - oyster shells.

As you know, he attended a private boys school in Perth, Scotch College.  This was probably an unexpected and major cultural challenge, being single gender, with compulsory uniforms, and a fixation with marching to music provided by a band of drums and bagpipes, every Friday.  He enjoyed playing Rugby Union and Water Polo for his school, and made many close friends while at Scotch, so you might be getting visits from some of them if they take a gap year in Europe.

In his original application, Valentin stated that he hoped he would get to know the culture, traditions and people of another country. For me it is very important that I get myself involved in the community. I also want to make friendships that last beyond the exchange and I am curious about new traditions and cultures that I may be able to learn about or participate in.

Valentin has certainly succeeded in doing that, and on behalf of myself and his other two mentors, Rotarian Graeme Fardon and returned exchange student Connor Ovens, we wish him well, and will miss him dearly.

Kenn's Musings
Another week, another PMM and a couple of great meetings.

1.  Perth Makers Market on Sunday was held on a perfect spring day at Heathcote and certainly appeared to attract the crowd.  Busy day for the Parking team with all going well keeping the punters parked up with only the usual minor issue to resolve.  Hopefully the banking will help to restock our coffers with Chris reporting that ‘tap and go’ yielded consistently higher willing donations for our volunteer efforts. Saturday morning set up takes about 2 hours and the pack out and back into storage about the same, never easy work but with at least 6 helping it works well.
Our gazebo at the entrance to the market is well positioned for promoting the groups we support, our activities and giving the public the opportunity to find out more about Rotary in Western Australia.

2. I was disappointed to see only a few of us from Applecross Rotary at the DG Pat’s Monday evening joint Club event with Melville and Canning River also attending. I appreciate that DG addresses are not everyone’s ’cup of tea ‘ but we did stay away in numbers!

3. Farewell to Valentin and congratulations to Ian Fairnie.
If you missed Thursday night at the Dome, then you missed one of the clubs BEST NIGHTS EVER!! The outpouring of appreciation and love for Valentin as he makes his way home to Germany today after his year with Applecross Rotary were quite overwhelming.  His college mates, 4 of whom attended along with one of his teachers, spoke so highly of him and his involvement in all facets of school life, and the friendships that had developed along the way.

Valentin’s address covered off on highlights of his stay with us… and there were many of them! He spoke from the heart in thanking Applecross Rotary and all those who had made his visit so special. He reserved a special thank you for Lorri and said that she was his ‘favourite mum’ in Oz, with Lorri responding lovingly.

Ian Fairnie was presented with a special PHF pin for his ongoing financial contributions to the Rotary Foundation, and Applecross Rotary presented an Appreciation Certificate for Ian’s 40 years in Rotary. Ian has been an outstanding contributor towards a better world and we thank him for his ongoing contribution to our Applecross Rotary.

WELL DONE IAN!

Universal Child Care
Universal Child Care

Accessing Child Care is something that needs to be understood in the context of modern life in the 21 century where having both parents working is essential for most people in making any progress financially and achieving the great Australian dream of owning a home, or some other goal.   Importantly, subsidised Child Care should not be only available to those who earning high salaries.  But can we afford to open it up to everyone?

Helen Creed moved to Perth in 1977, as a social worker, working in the childcare sector.

In 1985, Helen started work with the Miscellaneous Workers’ Union (‘the Misso’s) as an organiser for child care, that also covered teacher assistants. Her social work background really fitted into that very well and she made a long term commitment around community-based children's services, with an interest in policy.
