PRIDE OF WORKMANSHIP AWARD
John Hosking, who nominated Joe Florio for this award, is a very happy customer, and has been for many years. After Joe moved to East Fremantle John and Jan thought that was a bit too far to go but after becoming very frustrated with poor service, extensive and expensive mistakes with lenses and frames that sought Joe out again and have never regretted it. Joe has been in the optometry business for over 40 years and still loves going to work everyday because his customers really appreciate his technical and interpersonal skills. Congratulations Joe!
PETER MCEWEN
Continuing the tradition of new members telling older members a bit about themselves, Peter grew up right by Lake Karrinyup Country Club and started working as a caddy there when he was 12. By the time he was 14 he started working at Hamersley Public Golf Course and showed enough promise with his own clubs that he was tempted by a professional golf traineeship when he finished school at Scarborough Senior High School.
However Peter chose to study chemistry at UWA graduating with a First Class Honours degree in Organic Chemistry. He joined the fertilizer company CSBP after graduation and has been in the crop production side of agriculture more or less ever since.
His impressive story is available for viewing here but suffice to say he is very knowledgeable about cropping, especially in WA, about careful and judicious use of fertilisers, international trade in fertilisers, and the agribusiness and environmental politics that go with it.
Peter’s career has taken him all over the world – he even made time while living in Esperance to join Rotary in 2002, which made ‘selling’ him on Applecross Rotary at last year’s JacFest pretty easy for Kenn Williams.
Peter is still a force to be reckoned with on the golf course, and he is a pretty good judge of the AFL competition judging by his success in the Tipping Competition.
His advice is to balance our lives and his formula (he’s a chemist remember) blends Business, Family, Travel, and Golf with his Rotary Service.
Welcome to Applecross Rotary, Peter!
The May Fellowship Sundowner will now be hosted at Margaret and Barry Mendelawitz home, 57 Melville Beach Rd in Applecross, on Thursday 30 May. Hamish and Chris will be in deep discussions about a project they are launching in the Kalbarri area, but plan to host the Sundowner in July.
