President Barry welcomed guest speaker Phil Wynn from Shalom House, and bid farewell to Visiting Rotarian Roger Painter who was about to return to Canada – it’s 6 degrees and raining at home today!

He also welcomed Peter McEwen back from his scoping visit to Nepal and his meetings there about setting up an AMR project with the Rotary Club of Kasthamanadap, and the Nepal Medical College Teaching Hospital.  According to Peter this augurs well for a successful Global Grant application to enable work to start in April 2020.

Lorri Brazier advised members that Applecross Rotary recently received the highest award from Starick Industries for our assistance with their work supporting victims of domestic violence.

HAPPY DOLLARS
Clive Pearson took home the white wine for winning Gordon Dunbar’s tossing, Suresh Prabhakaran celebrated a birthday (and also quitting Shell, at long last), while Kenn Williams and Logan Duncan-Smith celebrated 22 and 2 years as Rotarians.  Several members were happy to welcome our Treasurer Andrew Bower back home from his honeymoon in Vietnam.

The Funeral Cortege for Prof Raymond Wales of Applecross will arrive at FREMANTLE Cemetery Carrington St. Palmyra at 3.00pm on WEDNESDAY (18.12.2019) for a Cremation Service.
Please assemble at the Carrington Pavillion at 2:45pm.

The following article was posted on Applecross Rotary's website on Jan 20, 2017 by Kate Zappa. Kate met with Ray in his home office and video recorded the interview.  The following are the links to the interview -

VALE Professor Ray Wales

Ray was the first of our longer serving members to speak at Club breakfasts. It's an initiative we're undertaking having realised that many members may know little of their secret past.

GUEST SPEAKER: Phil Wynn Shalom House

Restoring the lives of men, women and families

Shalom House is a men’s residential rehabilitation centre located in the heart of the Swan Valley in Perth.  Phil has been a Shalom House resident for two years, and volunteers as the PA to the Chief of Staff.
Phil was a very successful hospitality manager of fine dining restaurants such as Jacksons and Clarks, but it’s an industry rife with drugs.  Fortunately, after two years at Shalom House he can now spend his weekends with his three young sons and continue the reconciliation process with their mother.
Shalom House is known to be the strictest rehabilitation centre in Australia.  With its no-nonsense approach, many non-negotiable boundaries and strict rules for the residents to abide by, Shalom House ensures they all move through the program as fast as possible while at the same time making sure they receive as much from the program as possible.
Most of the residents are methamphetamine addicts whose family life has been destroyed by their addiction.  Shalom House only works with those that are fully committed to going ‘cold turkey’, with the support of psychiatrists and medical practitioners, so they can be restored to their families.  The program has an emphasis on Fellowship and Discipleship, and has a very strong Christian basis.
Unfortunately the City of Swan spent millions of dollars in recent years trying to shut down Shalom’s operations, but good sense prevailed when they finally lost their case at the State Administrative Tribunal.

Final meeting for 2019: Tuesday morning 17 December.

Finish the calendar year with a memorable morning of fun as we play SPITEFUL SANTA once again.  Bring a wrapped gift of between $5 and $20 (max) and see what happens next!

Importantly, it is our Club’s opportunity to hear our outbound exchange student Connor Ovens present, in English, the talk he will give hundreds of times in Germany (and in German) while on exchange with the Rotary Club of Willich next year.   The talk is meant to convey information about the country Connor comes from, something about his family and friends, and what he’d like to do after he comes home at the end of 2020.  Of course this talk will change as the year progresses when he’ll start rehearsing in late 2020, the talk he’ll give us in early 2021, in English, about his time in Germany.

Please plan on coming along, bring friends and family, especially anyone who may be a future outbound exchange student.
