Co - President's Notes Tom Atkinson & Murray McKay

Dear Rotarians and friends,

Last week our local Rotary Community Group (RCG) organised a webinar session with John Berger from the WA Alliance to End Homelessness. Every meeting on this topic re-enforces the complicated nature of this all encompassing issue, but John had a wealth of knowledge having been a leader in the sector, and pointed us to both community and Rotary based initiatives that would be worthy of support.

John's presentation slides can be found here -

I would encourage members to view the Rotary Homeless hub also to find a number of existing Rotary projects to end homelessness -

Applecross Rotary is fortunate to again be one of the local community groups being supported by Grill'd Restaurant in Applecross. We are looking to organise a dinner at Grill'd in the near future, please tell others to get down and put a bottle cap in our bucket!

Yours in Rotary,

Co-Presidents Tom and Murray

GUEST SPEAKER: Dr Simon de Lestang

Simon says: Listen and learn more about Western Red Lobsters!

Our guest speaker Dr Simon de Lestang, knows more about WA Lobsters than pretty much anyone else.

That’s probably why he is the Principal Research Scientist (Offshore Crustaceans, Stock Assessment and Projects) with the Fisheries Department, now part of the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD).
Simon’s a local boy, went to Murdoch University for his undergraduate degree and PhD, and he has travelled extensively overseas, including when he had a Churchill Fellowship, which took him to the Americas.
Anyway it’s the Stock Assessment bit of his job that interests most people - tell us how many crays we can catch this summer please!  Except they’re not crays. In the science lab they are called Panulirus cygnus, but they are generally known as the Western Rock Lobster, or to be particularly annoying, the Western Rock (Spiny) Lobster.  Crays are crawfish, the stuff you party within New Orleans.  The Western Rock Lobster is one of four types of lobster that can be found around the Australian coastline:

Western Australia's Western Rock Lobster Fishery has received international acknowledgement as one of the best managed and most sustainable in the world and is one of only a handful of fisheries in Australia where a long-term scientific program informs predicted catches up to four years in advance. Thank you Simon (Simon says: you’re very welcome). The program also provides estimates of the breeding stock levels, factoring in natural variations to the population, as it responds to both fishing activity and environmental conditions.  Catch predictions are influenced by an extensive, year-round monitoring program estimating the abundance of post-larval stage lobsters (puerulus) settling on inshore reefs along the West Coast.

Research has indicated that puerulus will settle onto collectors (which mimic floating seaweed).

Most settlement occurs during the period of no moon and ceases when moonlight intensity rises above 10% of full moonlight.  Sampling during the full moon period ensures that the samples are representative of the previous month’s (dark-moon) settlement period.  Each panel from each collector is shaken a prescribed number of times and any puerulus present are counted.

The puerulus migrate from the coastline westwards and then move northwards against the direction of the Leeuwin current which runs along the coast from north to south.  Since puerulus numbers generally peak in Spring and are their lowest in Autumn, the settlement season is considered to start in May and end in the following April.  At the end of the settlement season, in April each year, a seasonal average is determined, which is the sum of the monthly averages from May to April, inclusive. This seasonal average has consistently shown a strong correlation with the abundance of lobsters three to four years later.

Environmental factors, such as the strength of the Leeuwin Current, winter/spring westerly wind patterns, and water temperatures, play an important role in the survival and settlement of puerulus and thus the numbers that are counted.

This year the prolonged spell of high daily temperatures had led to the water at the Ningaloo Reef habitat, for example, to be 5 degrees higher than usual and this is likely to have a devastating effect on the numbers of abalone and scallops along the coast, and may negatively impact the numbers of lobsters available to catch in 2029-30.  We’ll know more in May.  Any good news? At the moment, likely numbers of octopus and crab seem to have been unaffected by the higher water temperatures.

Kenn's Musings
A bit on the Social side for this update.

1. Sundowner at Tompkins Park
Thursday, 27th of Feb, 5pm.
Let’s get back into the swing of another AxR get-together, and those who want to stay on and have a bite to eat can look forward to good Club Tucker.
Don’t forget to either bring your Membership card, or link with someone who does if you want to buy a drink.

2. GRILL’D Healthy Burger in Applecross:
A potential $300 fund raiser for AxR if we can get enough support as a participating community group.
Month of March is open for this so let’s plan for middle of the month evening and see if we can hustle up the numbers to win their community prize offer.

3. Sundowner in a Members home, for later in March.
These are always popular; all we need is the offer of your place to make it happen.
Peta and I will be away but happy to offer our place for a later date.

Let’s not forget the support for the Makers Market on the 23rd Feb, Hyde Park Festival and Rotary Health at the end of Feb, and Wireless Hill Open Day for Community Radio end of March.

All for now,
Kenn.

ROTARY ART SHOW AND SALE (50th Year)

Its nearing that time of the year again.

The combined Applecross / Melville Rotary Clubs will be hosting the annual Art Show from 8th to 15th June. The event is held in the display area of the Westfield Garden City Shopping Centre in front of Woolworths.

This event provides a wonderful platform to promote our local artists.

We normally have around 450 paintings on display and in so doing promote about 150 artists.

The setting up, the manning of the display – and finally the dismantling, consumes considerable time and effort. Consequently your support would be appreciated and it’s the old saying “….many hands……”.

Applecross Rotary's responsibility is for the setting up, the manning of the display and finally dismantling on the Sunday afternoon. Also manning the display on the Monday ,Wednesday,  Friday  and the Sunday morning, with Melville Rotary responsible for the alternate days.

A blank roster will be circulated at the end of the month. Roster stints include a range of options ie:  morning / afternoon and evening in 3 hour time slots. This way the roster caters for everyone.

The purpose of this note is to ask you to diarise a day /days and then once the roster is out you can indicate what times best suit.

In closing – as this is our 50th year so can you give some thought as to how best we can advertise this achievement.

Looking forward to your suggestions.

Thanks

Hamish
