GUEST SPEAKER - Judi Lane
(Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research)
PE Barry Mendelawitz and Judi Lane
Judi is the Community Education and Engagement Manager with the Harry Perkins Institute for Medical Research - HPMRI. She started by introducing the four people who come to work with her every day: her father, who died from lung cancer (as did Harry Perkins); her mother, who died from breast cancer; her younger brother who beat off a melanoma in his early 20’s only to have it return after several years and take his life a few months later; and finally her husband who died from an extremely aggressive brain cancer.
Small wonder really that Judi decided that she needed to do more to encourage research into cancers, one of the adult medical conditions that HPMRI focuses on. The others are cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and neuromuscular diseases. The HPMRI operates from buildings at QEII Medical Centre and the Fiona Stanley Precincts, which means the diagnostic laboratories are close to the hospital beds. The aim is to reduce the fatality rates of these adult diseases while researching to find the cures.
to see how individuals can help, and to suggest ways in which our Club can help.

Ray Wales recently discovered a sum of $11000 had been misappropriated from his bank account. Ray's experience is a timely reminded to regularly check your statements to make sure they are legitimate transactions. Fortunately this story has a happy ending as the bank refunded the money in full. Looking forward to Ray's HAPPY DOLLARS for next meeting!
