The week's notes

Fireside Chat

Dr Ian Fairnie conducted another interesting interview at last week's meeting.  This time it was president Logan's turn.   Ian made comment "that the standard thing is that you talk to the person about what they did before Rotary and try and do that in about five minutes and then spend the rest of the time talking about Rotary, but I sat down with Logan on Friday afternoon and I was just so fascinated by the stories he has just given you all about Logan and how basically picked himself up and started all over again every time there seems to be a blockage he will find a way around it in a very very nice way, and I am really pleased that not only did you come back to Applecross as Applecross Rotary but you are now our President."

Club visit to the Canning Vale Recycling Centre

A very informative and interesting visit to the Resource Recovery Group - Canning Vale Centre was experienced by a group of our members and partners.  The centre has been operational since 2005 and is designed to recover 85% of household waste. The Canning Vale Centre processes waste from the lime-green-topped Food Organics Garden Organics (FOGO) bins and yellow-topped recycling bins. The Centre diverts more than 100,000 tonnes of waste per year from landfill. Very impressive.  Another impressive thing we found out at the tour was the Recycle Right ... website and mobile app. that provides a simple and convenient way to find out which bin to put it in, find recycling centres and drop off points in Perth and get tips and advice on living more sustainably.  Check it out by clicking here.

Zone 8 Regionalisation Project

At tomorrow's meeting Chris Whelan will outline how the regionalisation trial will work.  Rotary International is considering a project to address membership, public image, communication, leadership, and fundraising challenges to help define a more sustainable future for Rotary. Our region, or Zone 8, which includes Australia, New Zealand, and the Pacific Islands, has been selected as one of two potential regions from across the globe to pilot a regional approach to governance.

Community Director Brett Hammill has found an interesting ABC story on volunteering that is worth a read.  Rotary is mentioned.  Click here for the link to the story.

Clive Pearson Wins Applecross Rotary Footy Tipping

This is a unique opportunity to attend a Rotary International Convention.  As Chris Whelan pointed out the "RI convention comes to Australia once in an adult life". The event runs from the 27th of May to 30th May 2023. Chris has shared his plans based on arriving 26 May and departing 30 May as follows:
Costs?…(no liability):
  • Registration: $690.
  • Air fares at present $ 680 return
  • Accommodation… up to you
  • Snacks included at lunch. Other meals on your own account.
  • Thousands of new friends to enjoy. Inspiration at every corner.
  • For any of you who are not aware; this is a great event.

Just do it!

And Ian Fairnie also added "Helen and I attended the RI Convention in Bangkok in 2012 and it was one of the best experiences we have had (still is) so I personally recommend it".

The promotional landscape is changing rapidly, get up to speed now, not just to help promote Applecross Rotary but your business and other organisations you help will benefit.
This will be an enjoyable afternoon where we will learn from each other as well as from others who do this very well.
Come along if you have something to learn, something to share or a mix of the two!
It is all on Zoom, to ensure you can attend in the comfort of your own home and be ‘covid-safe’.  You are also welcome to get together with others and join in as a group. We will be finishing with a BYO sundowner.
This is the first of our Adventure series this year. We are very excited to get started! See you there!
