Chris Caithness needs our support to help boost the numbers to get an event she is organising off the ground for the 26th May at Hoyts Garden City.

It's for an exclusive showing of the Jaimen Hudson documentary about his efforts to become the first quadriplegic to go diving. Jaimen is from her home town (his Dad was her high school art teacher) and his amazing drone photography and videography of the Esperance coastline has gone viral around the world. It's an all ages, inspiring movie of a young man, who has such a positive outlook on life despite everything he has gone through.

Chris needs to sell another 51 tickets in the next couple of days otherwise the event will be cancelled.  Please consider attending and sharing with your family and friends.

Bring along to the meeting your donations for FOODBANK.

Greg will be joining tomorrow's meeting and will pickup our FOODBANK donations.

Our Changeover and 50th Anniversary celebrations will be on Tuesday 6th July at The Sunshine Harvester Works, 1 James St Fremantle.
Masterchef celebrity Brendan Pang is creating a delicious six-course finger food menu for this special occasion.  Dress is your choice, however it will be a 70's theme to celebrate our 50th Anniversary with the club being admitted into Rotary International on the 2 June 1971.
Secretary Chris Whelan has issued a challenge to Applecross Rotary members and friends to let him know the contact details of past members and/or friends who might enjoy this celebration so he can send them a formal invitation with all the details when finalised. Email Chris at the following address - secretary@applecrossrotary.org

We have  been invited to tour BRIGHTWATER'S OATS STREET FACILITY this Thursday at 10am.  Last year we had an interesting presentation on Brightwater's Music Pharmacy.  The Brightwater music and wellbeing program explores how socially stimulating music can be for people in general, as this benefits all in the community.  Brightwater Oats Street is a community based residential rehabilitation service for individuals who have experienced an acquired brain injury.  Last call for people interested in attending - Email Liz Palmer at  lizsdrop@hotmail.com

All club members are invited to meet the District 9465 team, hear about Rotary updates, learn about our District programs and share how we will Serve to Change Lives in 2021-22 at the upcoming District 9465 Assembly on 30 May 2021, 9am - 2pm at the North Lake Campus, Kardinya.

WESTERN AUSTRALIA NEARLY WASN"T!
Our guest speaker for last week was Jim Cameron who completed a PhD in 1975.  The content of his doctorate reflected on his experience as an immigrant and he was intrigued by the various methods migrants used to come to terms with the Western Australian environment which was very unfamiliar to them.  He focused on how the first group of immigrants (1829 onwards) developed their agricultural systems.

In his opening remarks he commented on Western Australian history by saying "Australian history is NOT Western Australian history".  He made the following points to support this statement -
  • Captain Cook did not discover Australia in 1770 ... that honour belongs to Dirk Hartog 1616.
  • Western Australians chose to become a convict colony.
  • Western Australia was not claimed by Britain for the fear of the French ... that honour (?) rests solely with James Stirling who explored the area and lobbied for its occupation with him as governor.  His desire was to improve family fortune.
Jim took us through the timeline of events from 1828 using requests to the Colonial Office to reconstruct his storyline to demonstrate how Western Australia nearly wasn't.
