PRESIDENT BARRY welcomed guest speaker Sara David AM, and also Applecross Rotarian Jamie Kelly, after a long absence. Jamie responded just as another prodigal did last week, and promptly won the wine, thanks to Tim Inglis’ tossing!
REPORTS:
Liz Palmer and Chris Whelan advised members about members recovering from various maladies: Lesley Combes is making slow progress, and Cecil Aaron, who also went to hospital voluntarily only to develop complications after heart surgery, is hoping to be home soon. Lorri Brazier slipped and dislocated her shoulder on Monday but was out of hospital next day, while Helen Jones is making slow progress from a hip fracture.
Liz also announced the next Sundowner would be hosted by George Mavros on 27 February and will be a BBQ. Liz is also working on a wine lunch somewhere on Sunday 15 March.
Tim Inglis did a short Q&A on coronavirus. In summary, there are bigger things happening, such as more deaths from sepsis (which cannot be successfully treated with antibiotics) than all cancers combined. On an average day just in Australia, over 50 will die of smoking related disease and eight people will commit suicide. Each year over 2000 die from complications of influenza (most over age 85). Thus far world wide there have been around 1000 deaths associated with the new corona virus, mostly in China.
HAPPY DOLLARS:
John Henderson celebrated a birthday on 11 February, Lee and Jamie Kelly celebrated a wedding anniversary on 8 February, and Ron Bower a Rotary anniversary on 7 February. Hamish Turner was happy the rains had put out some big fires in NSW, and Liz Palmer celebrated becoming a grandmother again!
Guest Speaker - Sara David AM, founder and CEO of Living Child Inc.
Living Child Inc., the charity that Perth Midwife Sara David established in 2012, works in the East Sepik Province of Papua New Guinea, with villages in the Karem River system, such as Yamen and Bunam.
Women in these communities are now able to choose when and how many children they have, are able to give birth safely, and know that their children will have every opportunity to grow and thrive.
With the support of Melville Rotary and Willetton’s Interact Club, Living Child Inc. has been able to:
train 100 village birth attendants
provide 5000 birthing kits
train 36 maternity health workers
train 100 health workers in contraceptive implants
supply 3000 implants to village women
establish 25 village care groups that provide education, equipment and resources to improve health, nutrition, sanitation and hygiene.
Last year Applecross Rotary provided funds to Living Child Inc. to manufacture “Tippy Taps”, simple water containers used for hand washing.
According to Sara, hand wishing with soap makes all the difference in reducing maternal and infant sickness and death, something that President Barry stresses every chance he gets with respect to antimicrobial resistance.
Sara also credits Barry with some critical advice when she was considering establishing her charity: Think Large, Start Small, Start NOW!
Make up a table and support Mellville City Rotaract Club's first fund raising event!
Applecross Rotary will be on display from the 1st March for token votes to win the monthly first prize of $300 at 'Grill'd Applecross' (18 Riseley St). Spread the word to your family and friends to vote for AxR when they receive a token for every burger they order. At the end of the month $500 is splt between three community groups ($300 for first, $100 for 2nd and 3rd).
