President's  Notes

This year’s AFL grand final at Optus Oval was an amazing spectacle, one that will be remembered for a long time! Members Kenn and Peta, and Brett were lucky enough to secure tickets to this outstanding event. It was still a great watch for the rest of us in our homes. Congratulations to Melbourne on breaking their 57 year drought, although not everyone was happy!

Perth Makers Market
Despite the inclement weather, there was still a great roll out at Sunday’s market. Thanks to all members and volunteers that helped.

New Community Project
A special thank you to our anonymous Club member who will donate $10,000 to a new community project. The proviso is that the project needs the full support and involvement of all members.

At last week’s meeting, Community Services Director Clive led a brainstorming session. The following ideas were noted:
  • Environment day
  • Walk for change
  • Public toilet in Applecross Village
  • City of Melville wish list – to be expanded
  • Maintain a section of road and cycleway in area
  • Deepwater Point facilities playground.
We will have further 5 minutes brainstorming sessions at the next two meetings, prior to shortlisting projects.

MCCC Awards Project
A small working party, consisting of  representatives of Applecross and Cockburn Rotary Clubs, and MCCC executive will meet on 29 September to define objectives and the process moving forward. From our perspective, we will target apprentice and youth awards to be presented at the MCCC 2021 Christmas function. Additional business awards will be discussed with a view to being formally awarded in September 2022.

Two tables have already been committed!
We are targeting around 20 tables of 10 persons.
There will be 6 races with 6 horses. Each horse is auctioned and 50% of race proceeds are retained for the Charity.
A Melbourne Cup Calcutta will also be held.
We hope to raise over $5,000 for the new WA Children’s Hospice.

Spring
Don’t forget to send in your spring photos.

This week’s photo was taken near Mollerin.

New look at Perth Makers Market
Thanks to Cindy Wiese we presented a more professional look at our Makers Market stall on Sunday.

George Mavros made contact with a lot of the public by encouraging them to scan the QR code with the SAFEWA app as they passed our stall at the entrance to the market. We have a prime position to promote Rotary and with the professional eye of new member Cindy we will look to maximise the opportunity we have to promote our projects and activities as well as encourage new members.

In line with our continued improvement focus, Brett Hammill made some alterations to Chris Whelan's recent effort to streamline the task of restricting the verge parking along the pathway to the market's entrance.

With all this creative thinking from some of our members we still need people to do the heavy lifting as demonstrated by President Peter and supervised by AG Kenn.

The Perth Makers Market car parking activity is an important fundraiser for the club as described in Chris Whelan's article in last week's Applecross Advocate.  Sunday's weather caused fewer people than normal to attend and that will reflect in the donations we received.

AG Kenn's Jottings

That Day In September… a day to remember!
Peta and I were truly fortunate to be 2 of the 61,118 at the Grand Final on Sat night!

Even better to be in the Demons quarter, and see them win their first flag in 57 years!

For Peta, an ardent and long suffering Demons lover, ‘twas a dream come true… and to be hosted in our own home town! Got me thinking… we here in the West are so very lucky.

This Optus Stadium is a magnificent built for purpose arena in every way possible. Easy access in and out, great seating, all creature needs so handy with great food and beverage service! And, when the sun goes down, the lighting is spectacular.

Public transport to and fro was free and absolutely hassle free… couldn’t believe how easy and prompt, especially with the 60,000 heading home together after the game.

A truly fantastic event in anyone’s terms.

And a bit sad for Advocate Editor Ray, who looked very much a doghouse inhabiter by the end of the night! (Bulldog house, that is!)

Next Thursdays Sundowner in The Village.

Can we please have a good AxR attendance for the 2021 JacFest promo evening for local businesses in MP Kim Giddens Ardross St Office on Thurs from 5.15 til 6.15.pm, and a little later for AxR.

Our Lottery West Grant will be presented, Pete Stone from the CoM (and possibly our Mayor ) will attend, and we will let the Village businesses into the plans for the 21st Annual JacFest.

All about good community relations….

Normal ‘bring a plate’ rules to apply, drinks provided with our regular charge, and Kim Giddens Office will also support.

ONLY 8 WEEKS TO GO to our next special day!!!

RC Como has requested we share with our business contacts and friends.  They would love to see you and your family on the day!
