At Tuesday's meeting it was pleasing to see all of our attending members participate in our 'LIFT THE LID SILLY HAT DAY' to raise funds for Australian Rotary Health (ARH) Youth Mental Health Research.

Thanks to Community Service director Clive Pearson for organising the event and providing the authentic Vietnamese hat as the prize which was won by Chris Whelan.

Ninety five dollars was raised for ARH and with the participation of the approximate 1100 other Rotary Clubs throughout Australia, should raise a significant amount towards funding vital mental health research.

FOODBANK DONATIONS

Bring your donations along to Tuesday's meeting as Foodbank's CEO Greg Hebble will be joining us.

TAKE-5 TO WATCH HOW TO USE OUR ADR DEVICE

The club's HeartStart Automated External Defibrillator (AED) should be available at all our meetings, events and activities.  These devices are also located at many locations around the metro and regional areas of Australia and it would be worthwhile understanding where they are located near places that you frequent.

It is important to understand that survival rates for sudden cardiac arrest are directly related to how soon victims receive treatment.

GUEST SPEAKER: Roger Underwood  - Preventative medicine – the key to effective bushfire management

This week's guest speaker was Roger Underwood who is a forester with fifty years experience in bushfire management and bushfire science.  He has worked as a firefighter, a district and regional manager, a research manager and senior government administrator.

Roger's way of getting his message across by comparing the similar way of managing a health issue to effective bushfire management resonated well with his audience.

The bottom line is 'prevention is better than cure'.

The essence of preventative medicine:
  1.  Public health programs, to ensure a clean environment;
  2.  Inoculation, to prevent infectious diseases;
  3.  A professional and trained response system
The essence of effective bushfire management
  1. A clean and healthy environment, free from bushfire hazards;
  2. Period inoculation with prescribed fire to reduce bushland fuels; and
  3. A well-trained and equipped force of firefighters

How to spread the word about antibioticresistance

This is a very interesting overview of work being done by Wellcome Trust that should help communication re AMR.

For most health professionals working with communicable diseases, the greatest fear for the future is antimicrobial drug resistance. AMR already kills an estimated 700,000 people a year and could claim as many as 10m lives a year by 2050, according to a memorable series of reports for the UK government by the economist Jim O’Neill. Covid-19 can easily be seen as a setback for the AMR campaign, both because the pandemic is a distraction and because it has led many doctors to prescribe large quantities of antibiotics to coronavirus patients in the hope that they will suppress secondary bacterial infections, particularly in the lungs. But it is precisely such wholesale use of antibiotics that is enabling bacteria to evolve resistance to them. A more positive view is that the pandemic has made people so much more aware of infectious diseases that it should be possible to turn the world’s attention to the threat posed by bacteria as well as viruses.

Applecross Rotary Pop-Up Container Donation & Container Drop off Points
In support of Rotary's partnership with the Greenbatch Foundation our club is organising pop-up bag drop locations at various Club events and activities.

We will be trialling having our trailer and bins at the Deep Water Point car park at our breakfast meeting on the first Tuesday of the month.  This will be promoted by Greenbatch and people will be able to donate their eligible CDS containers to our scheme ID C10240570 or write their own scheme ID on the bagged containers to receive the refund.  This will enable Greenbatch to get the additional 6 cents per container as a Container Refund Operator.  Greenbatch will also take the non-CDS plastic type1 and type 2 containers supporting their mission to give waste plastic a new life ensuring it doesn't end up in landfill.

The other events that we have planned for our pop-up collection points are at the Perth Makers Market and the Rotary Jacaranda Festival.
