'East Sumba Malaria Prevention project'

Our speaker this week is Past District Governor John Kevan.  He is a Past President of the Rotary Club of Applecross, a retired Project Manager and a fiction author.  John is still very active as a member of the Rotary Club of Mandurah Districts.

He has pioneered a humanitarian project in East Sumba, Indonesia, in an area which receives very little government funding, because it is not a tourism spot, and only has a 5% Muslim population.  Malaria is still rife, with dengue and TB very prevalent.

Age Well!

Sep 23, 2025 7:30 am

David Beard is a highly qualified physiologist specialising in ageing and well-being. Having worked with people from 25 to 105 he knows that maintaining a healthy and active lifestyle is not only essential to enjoying life at any age, it's not as hard as you might think.

David Beard takes the vast and often confusing amount of health information and distils it into practical, usable information so his audience goes away with knowledge and strategies to implement lifestyle changes that are effective and sustainable.

What everyone needs to know now about health, fitness and living well in the second half of a great life!
There are seven characteristics of people who live a long and fulfilling life. Based on David’s years of working in the Aged Care industry and his first book “If I’d only known I’d live this long,” this is a great way to learn what changes people can make earlier in life to ensure they age gracefully and with the energy and enthusiasm they desire. He will share stories and lessons from some inspirational “old-timers” to help you discover what is possible as you enter the twilight years.

If you think growing old is all about walking frames and heart pills, think again.

Speaker: Dr Cassandra Smith - Exercise Physiologist

Dr Cassandra Smith is a dedicated clinician-researcher and Accredited Exercise Physiologist with over a decade of clinical experience. She is a National Heart Foundation and Vice Chancellor’s Postdoctoral Research Fellow based at the Nutrition & Health Innovation Research Institute, Edith Cowan University.

Dr Smith completed her PhD at Victoria University in 2022, where she gained deep insights into skeletal regulation across the lifespan and the vital role of exercise in musculoskeletal health. Her current research investigates why, with age, bone is lost while calcium accumulates in blood vessels—focusing on the influence of menopause and its potential role in the sex disparity observed in cardiovascular disease.

Drawing on in her extensive clinical experience, her research program is guided by a consumer-driven approach that incorporates lived experience and community engagement to ensure real-world relevance—optimising interventions that not only save lives but also enhance their quality.

Speaker: Brian Burke

Former Premier/ Author

Brian Thomas Burke is a former Labor Premier of Western Australia (1983 – 1988) and Australian Ambassador to Ireland and the Holy See (1988 -1991).

Some years after leaving office, Burke was charged with misusing his travelling allowance and was sent to prison. As soon as he learned of the “double dipping”, all allowances were repaid in full.

Burke returned from Ireland, where he was Australian Ambassador, to defend his reputation at the royal commission.

His jailing had a devastating impact on his life and on his family, particularly his wife, Sue, who he met at school and to whom he has been married for more than 50 years. They have six children and 19 grandchildren.

Burke recently published his autobiography, A Tumultuous Life, which deals in detail with his colourful and often controversial life and career.

Brian Burke is happy to speak about his book and its many subjects of interest, or on historic and current matters of political interest, and about the politicians involved.

Brian Burke is regarded as an excellent speaker, always prepared to address difficult subjects frankly and without fear.

Dec 09, 2025 7:30 am - 8:30 am

Speaker: Evil Santa

Last Meeting for 2025

RULES:

  1. Bring a wrapped gift to the value of no greater than $15.
  2. Place the gift on the table at the front of our meeting room.
  3. Before starting, everyone draws a number with the person with #1 starting the game.
  4. The game begins once #1 selects a gift from the pile (after much thought and deliberation, of course), opens it, and shows it to everyone.
  5. The person who drew #2 then goes and has the option to steal #1's gift (aka "Evil Santa") or pick a different gift from the pile. This continues with each person having the chance to steal or choose a wrapped gift. A gift can be stolen no more than three times. The MC (Tom)  will keep a tally of each gift and announce once a gift is "dead" and can no longer be stolen.
  6. A gift can also only be stolen once per turn. For example, if person #17's gift was stolen, and they steal from person #5, then person #5 cannot steal the gift that was taken from #17.
  7. If your gift is stolen, you can't steal it right back. You can steal another gift or choose from the pile.
  8. When all the gifts have been opened, the person who drew #1 has the option to steal a gift (since they did not have any gifts to steal initially). If they choose not to steal and keep the gift they have, the game is over. If they decide to steal, then the game continues until someone decides to keep their gift.
