Currently, the status of the project is as follows:
Container Deposit Scheme Launch Delayed
Due to the impact of Coronavirus, the launch date for WA's Container Deposit Scheme has been postponed from 02 June 2020 until August 2020 at the very earliest and maybe even to June 2021.
Despite this delay:
  • Greenbatch-Rotary Coordination Group (the working group formed by Rotary in WA to implement this exciting project across interested clubs in Districts 9465 and 9455) is continuing to meet on a fortnightly basis (using Zoom) to progress the implementation of the Greenbatch-Rotary alliance and the development of various resources to assist clubs.
  • Greenbatch continues to operate, and is working hard to expand its network of plastic container collectors and supporters who will be able to select Rotary as the beneficiary of the eligible containers they lodge with Greenbatch once the CDS commences. Greenbatch is currently making changes to their operation to accommodate the restrictions to restrict the spread of COVID-19. This includes developing procedures to make it easier for supporters to deliver plastic, glass and aluminium containers to Greenbatch without having to travel to their facility in Mt Claremont.
  • Funds contributed to date by participating clubs are being used to upgrade Greenbatch’s recycling education facility.  Whilst the on-site education programs have been temporarily halted due to changes in school programs to mitigate the impact of COVID-19, this is an opportune time for Rotary clubs which have pledged funds to this project, but not yet paid, to honour their commitment.
  • The delay in commencement of the CDS is in some way fortunate as it gives each Rotary club time to:
    • identify ‘champions’ within their membership to drive and be the liaison point for the project. We are planning to organise online training sessions for these people in due course;
    • form a sub-committee to consider the opportunities this project offers for fund raising and relationship building with schools, businesses and the community in general;
    • understand the processes and local logistics required to implement and manage the project;
    • recruit organisations (businesses, sporting clubs, etc.) to collect and donate eligible CDS containers to Rotary that will return 10¢ per container in much needed funding for Rotary projects.
