Late last year June Wade, ShelterBox Area Coordinator and ShelterBox Chair for Rotary District 9465 asked Gail McCulloch, as President of the Rotary Club of Attadale, if she would hold the Western Australian launch of the ShelterBox book: -
‘2020 Vision - Eyes Wide Open in the Disaster Zone’
This was to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of ShelterBox and proceeds from the sale of the books are to go towards disaster relief and help ShelterBox achieve their vision of a world where no family is without shelter following a disaster.
Due to COVID 19 the Western Australian Launch of this inspirational book could not take place.
Mike Greenslade the ShelterBox CEO is also a commercial photographer. While on many deployments he took pictures that told the story of the natural disasters they encountered.
He produced the coffee table style photography book, featuring 200 pages of full colour images that illustrate the resilience of the human spirit in extreme adversity and the determination of those that work with communities to help them recover.
Our club has purchased a box of these books that showcase the amazing impact ShelterBox has on the lives of those in need. They would make an excellent Christmas gift and you can buy these inspirational books at our breakfast meeting at $35 each.
Another gift suggestion is the book titled She's No Lady - She's the Vet: Stories from 100 Years of Female Vets in Australia One of the authors is our esteemed member Helen Jones (dec) and the club has copies available at $35 each that would also make an excellent Christmas gift.
This book about female graduates in veterinary science over a 100-year period should prove of interest to people contemplating life as a veterinarian, or as a partner of a veterinarian. The participation of women in the veterinary profession has increased spectacularly in Australia over the past 50 years and by the third decade of the 21st century will comprise nearly 80 per cent female graduates.
