60th Anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan
This year marks the 60th anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan, one of Australia’s most defining actions of the Vietnam War. On 18 August 1966, 108 soldiers from D Company, 6RAR held their ground against a vastly larger enemy force in the Long Tan rubber plantation. Despite overwhelming odds, torrential rain, and limited visibility, their discipline, courage, and teamwork became a lasting symbol of Australian service.
The battle claimed 18 Australian lives, and its legacy continues through Vietnam Veterans Day, observed annually on 18 August. It is a time to honour all who served—those who returned, those who did not, and those who still carry the memories of their service.
Sixty years on, Long Tan remains a powerful reminder of resilience, mateship, and the enduring responsibility we share to support veterans and preserve their stories.
