An exciting start for the year as we farewell our Rotary Youth Exchange student Connor Ovens who flys out to Germany on Friday.  Also this year will be the 20th anniversary of the Rotary Jacaranda Festival and planning for our 50th anniversary of the club celebration on the 2nd June 2021.
President - elect for 2020-21 Ray Philp and President nominee for 2021 - 22 Peter McEwan are keen to hear from members wanting to get more involved in Rotary and are interested in any of the Director and committee/project chair positions. Contact Ray or Peter to discuss.
"What it's like" to host two generations of Youth Exchange  students
At our meeting on Tuesday we will farewell our Rotary Youth Exchange Student (RYE) Connor Ovens.  Connor's mother, Rotarian Chris Caithness, knows from her experience of being a RYE student that this will be a life changing event for Connor.

A recent story in RI's 'Youth Exchange News' is well worth a read as our club is looking for host families for an inbound student later this year.

"When we talk to potential host families, we tell them the greatest thing about Rotary Youth Exchange: If you agree to host a student from a foreign country for several months in your home, you will host them in your heart for the rest of your lives".

RAWCS National Bush Fire Appeal

We have all seen the disastrous fires that have erupted, taking lives as well as destroying hundreds of homes and properties across Australia.

Rotary is once again taking the lead and looking to provide support for families in need. To this end several Rotary Districts and Clubs have established projects which are ready and able to accept donations from you. All of those projects can apply for funds from this appeal.

The new 'Rotary Bush Fires National Appeal' is a Rotary Australia Relief Fund (RARF) project.  This enables collection of donations to assist Rotary Clubs to support people affected by the bush fires.  The Rotary Australia Relief Fund (Managed by RAWCS) has Deductible Gift Recipient (DGR) registration and has been listed as a Charitable Fund so we can accept tax deductible donations from individuals or organisations.

Rotary - Greenbatch Alliance Update
We have raised sufficient funds for the first part of the education facility with additional Rotary clubs coming on board in the New Year to reach the fundraising target of $150,000.

The good news is that Rotary and Greenbatch are now formally working together as covered in the original MOU.  The next main objective is getting the clubs organised for the Container Deposit Scheme (CDS) program.  This has to start NOW as other non profit and profit organisations are actively recruiting container donations.  This is done by presenting and explaining the Greenbatch collection contract to local businesses, with proceeds going into Applecross Rotary's fund raising account to be spent back in the community through Rotary projects.

At the recent 'Falls Festival' Rotary and Greenbatch volunteers collected 39000 CDS eligible containers.  Not only great for the environment but an excellent example of the fund raising potential of the CDS program.
