Eleven club members accepted the invitation from the Wayland Bay Sea Scouts (WBSS) to join them for their Australia Day breakfast and award presentations. We took the opportunity to present a certificate of appreciation to the group.
The Applecross Rotary and WBSS relationship grows stronger each year which dates back to the 2009 Jacaranda Festival. The WBSS assisted in running the 'sausage sizzle' and the club donated an outboard motor for their efforts. Over the past few years the WBSS have also assisted with the bump in/ bump out and various jobs throughout the day. This year they provided a resource of 65 willing volunteers of Parents, Cubs, Scouts, Venturers and Rovers and we were pleased to be able to donate $5000 for their efforts. Without the support of this amazing local community group the success of the 2020 Jacaranda Festival would not have been possible.
Applecross Rotarian Helen Jones Fairnie remembered and celebrated
On Thursday Ian and Family were finally able to conduct a Memorial Eucharist service at St Michael's Church in Mt Pleasant followed by a "Wake" at the East Fremantle Football Club for Helen. A video presentation was shown at the "Wake" of Helen's life, her family and career. The presentation was compiled by Paula Jones with photographs supplied by Paula, Ian and his sons Callum and Michael, Jo and Kevin Bell, Facebook friends and other online sources. The soundtrack of the first presentation on Helen's life was specially composed by Helen's brother, Peter Jones. Both events were 'Zoomed' to family and friends in the eastern states. The recordings of both events can be accessed from the following links. Apologies for the sound quality and a few other blemishes, however as Ian said "they do not detract in any way in showing the love that was held for Helen".

President's bar-b-cue/ Sundowner
Thanks to Liz, David, Lorri, Jan and Val for their assistance in making our first Sundowner for 2021 a great success.
Photographer Max Cunnington captured Lorri sitting with the 'boys' to break up the gender split!
I nearly forgot to thank Kenn and Clive for their brilliant work on the Ziegler & Brown bbq's!
As per AxR events, 'a great team effort'.
Handicamp Appreciation
Handicamp is a live-in camp for 18-35 year old people with a disability, who are teamed with a "buddy" for a week of fun and adventure. It is held in January each year. Our club contributed $800 to sponsor a Handicamp attendee who applied independently of a Rotary club nomination. The following letter was received from the parent of the attendee who we sponsored:
Dear Applecross Rotarians
I write on behalf of my son, Andrew Wilkins, who last week attended Handicamp at Point Walter. We wish to express our sincere gratitude for your sponsorship. The camp allowed Andrew to experience many activities, both enjoyable and challenging, that he would not otherwise be exposed to.
Andrew is by nature a retiring person, and I must admit to being mystified as to his request that he attend the camp. Many of the activities listed were things that I could never imagine him volunteering to take part in. I wondered all week about what he was doing and if he secretly wanted to come home. It was with much pleasure that when we picked Andrew up on the Saturday morning, he was smiling and energised. Also, very proud of what he had achieved. We could not believe that he had been abseiling, gone on the flying fox, been donutting on the river and been on rides at Adventure World. He even had the photos to prove it!
The organisation of the camp was amazing as was the dedication of the volunteers who ran it. Such a wide and varied week. Andrew’s buddy, Jasper, was wonderful and knew how to gently push him that little bit further until he achieved the goal of the activity. All in all we could not be more grateful for your sponsorship and the time given by the people at the camp. Thank you.
Leonie and Paul Wilkins
Our secretary responded by thanking Leonie and Paul for their feedback and agreeing that the organisers and the buddies are the key contributors.
Congratulations to Handicamp Chair Wendy Cooper and her committee for enabling Handicamp 2021 to proceed.
I am very proud that our club was able to assist Handicamp 2021.
