At this weeks meeting I welcomed Perth Rotarian Jill Dawson together with their Exchange student Chiara Colombo from Italy, and Jill’s uncle John Ellis
Also welcomed was member-to-be Max Cunnington, and possible new member Chris Caithness, with Chris’ son Connor Ovens
BOARD REPORT
Last week’s Board meeting made a few decisions of interest to members:
1.  It has requested a review of the management of the recent Global Grant for Sri Lanka Laboratory Training and Equipment.  The Board also requested the President to ensure its successful implementation is broadcast via social media.
2.  The Board recommended to membership that we begin meeting for breakfast at the Dome Café at Deep Water Point, subject to a vote of members, and an MOU to ensure reasonable certainty about the sustainability of such a move.
3.  The Board approved a donation of $3000 to the Anawim Foundation in the Philippines to support the education of deaf children.  This is being done via a secure facility set up by Aquinas College.
4.  The Board confirmed the decision to purchase a portable defibrillator that will be present at all Club functions and events.
5.  The Board agreed that Applecross Rotary would re-engage with the Rotary Youth Exchange Program in 2019 with a view of facilitating both an outbound and inbound student in 2020.  We already have an applicant, Connor Ovens, and he will be interviewed by a Club committee, and then a District Committee, and will have to spend a weekend, away from his family and friends, with all the other outbound applicants, before the final decision is made.
DIRECTORS
Liz Palmer attended a Rotary Foundation dinner organised by RC Moora last weekend, and scored a banner to present to our Club.
HAPPY DOLLARS
Shauna Kinney celebrated her birthday by transferring $48 into the Club’s bank account, and members present found another $20 to go with it, especially from Max Cunnington who won the wine for a second week in a row and he’s not even a member (but will be next week).  It was very sad to see Dockers’ supporters shelling out before the season has started!

ROTARY YOUTH EXCHANGE
President-Elect Barry Mendelawitz hosted Perth Rotary visitors – Rotary Exchange student Chiara Colombo from Italy and Host Parent  Jill Dawson

It was almost coincidental that less than a week after the Board agreed to start participating in Rotary Youth Exchange again, we had a presentation from a RYE student from Italy.  Chiara Colombo has been at Perth Rotary since July 2018.  She told us all about her home, family, pets, as well as all the things she has been doing since coming to Perth.  It was clear from the end of her talk that she is really going to miss being here.

It was also clear from her most recent Host Mother Jill Dawson, that Perth Rotary is very experienced at hosting exchange students.  Jill has been hosting exchange students since she had two very young children and was living in Quairading.  She has three grown up children now, one of whom went on exchange, and has had at least one exchange student living in her home every year since the first one in Quairading.

Jill expressed her delight at hearing Applecross Rotary was getting back into RYE, and offered to help mentor Applecross members who hadn’t any recent experience in hosting an overseas student.

One of our members asked her about older members hosting a teenager, and she used the example of a Perth Rotary couple approaching their 80’s who had looked after Chiara for 3 months last year.  They loved it and so did Chiara.  “Of course she would” commented a member, “it would be like living with your grandparents!”

Starick

Starick is a not for profit organisation which provides multi-layered support services in Perth’s south-east metropolitan area to women and children experiencing family and domestic violence. Starick’s services include two refuges for women with children, supported community housing, court support, advocacy, children’s programs, community outreach services and an Op Shop. Applecross Rotary commenced support of Starick in 2016/17 with Malcolm Taylor and Lorri Brazier as Project Leaders. The work done by Lorri and Malcolm, and their support teams, has been carefully and sensitively undertaken and is leading to a trust being established between Starick, Applecross Rotary and the residents, most of whom have endured violence from their partners.

We are currently trialling an automated way of producing the bulletin.  President Ian is keen to hear your feedback and the eBulletin concept will be reviewed at the end of April.
Some early feedback is that the ebulletin is difficult to read on some computers, tablets, etc.  In discussion with David Honeychurch who has been producing an eBulletin for District and the Rotary Club of Willetton he advises the following -
"if members are using superseded technology the bulletin email may well present in an unreadable format. When that happens all they need to do is Click on the link provided in the text at the top of the Bulletin being: Having trouble viewing this email?  Click here to view it online.” and read it online"
