President's  Jottings
Ray PHILP
A very warm welcome to our new members inducted at last week's meeting - l-r Cindy Wiese, Masih Diba and Nik Bluett.
I received my Rotary Centenary Wine Collection last week and have been very impressed at the quality and price of the contents.  Also the labels have the 100 years of Rotary logo.

For every bottle purchased $2.50 will be going to the Centennial Ball function to make sure this will be a fitting celebration of 100 years of Rotary in Australia.  If you would like to attend the Centenial Ball we still have 2 tickets available on the Applecross Rotary table (contact Ray Philp).  To order the wine click here.

This week's FOOTY MARGINS winner was LIZ PALMER with 15 points (not sure who won?).

I had the pleasure, at the invitation of our Admin Director Tom Atkinson, to have lunch at Parliament House with Senator Ben Small.  Senator Small was first sworn in as a Western Australian Senator in November 2020, after being appointed to fill the caual vacancy created by the retirement of Finance Minister and Leader of the Government in the Senate, Senator the Hon. Mathias Cormann.  We extended an invitation for Senator Small to address our club in the near future.

Tom also invited Julien Stawell (Director JBS Property Consultants) and John Park (Head of Business Operations at Freight and Trade Alliance).

Come down to the AH Bracks Library + Creative Space to take in the Eye Contact Exhibition by Phil England on display until 24 April 2021.  An initiative of Rotary of Perth and Heirson, this travelling photographic exhibition helps raise awareness and much needed funds for Homeless Healthcare, and their mobile medical and nursing services.
This Thursday (15 April at 6pm) Ken Mullin, Chair Rotary WA Homeless Hub will talk about why Homelessness is so important to Rotary, Rotary's involvementin addressing it, and the purpose of the Eye Contact exhibition.  Also Michelle Blakeley, board member of the "My Home project, will talk about the project which aims to build villages of small homes for single older women who have found themselves homeless.  This is a free event however bookings are essential - https://bit.ly/3fNxhwV

Don't forget to mark in your calendars the 6th and 7th of July as one of them will be our Changeover and 50th anniversary celebrations.  The details should be confirmed soon. Some history is currently been collected and if you have any contributions let me know.  The following is the special representatives report on our application to form a club:
Starick Update
Last meeting's speaker was Helen Brady, who is a Domestic Violence Advocate (DVA) working as part of the mobile outreach team at Starick.

Applecross Rotary under the leadership of Lorri Brazier, have been supporting Starick since a presentation to the club in 2015 drawing our attention to the increasing crisis in the community caused by domestic violence.

Unfortunately the demand on services provided by Starick are increasing.

Starick is registered NFP organisation, providing multi layered support to women and children escaping family and domestic violence for over 35 years.  They work predominately in Perth's south-east metropolitan area.  Starick has 2 refuges as well as other programs to support women such as counselling, DVA's at Cannington and Armadale Police Stations, Safe at Home, and many more programs to support women and children.

Helen explained that Domestic Violence is often called "domestic and family violence" (FDV) because it is just not the intimate partners that abuse. FDV means any type of abuse that creates fear and controls another person.  Often causes physical, sexual and/ or psychological damage, forced isolation and economic deprivation.

Starick's Mobile Outreach Service is part of the COVID recovery plan. The plan aims to provide a smoother transition and ongoing support to a woman with or without children, who is experiencing domestic or family violence and who has or is about to exit the refuge environment.
